Cigarette Lighter?

Hi Guys,
The cigarette lighter in my 1984 Carrera does not illuminate, is this usual. I have had the small cap/disc off of the top of the main body but there is no bulb or socket underneath this cap/disc. The cap/disc is of transparent material therefor I would assume it lit up when pushed into the socket or was illuminated when the lights were on? Are there differing types of cigarette lighters for the 3.2?
As I have no other vehicle to check against members advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Paul
Paul, thanks for that I did have my suspicions that was the case. I was looking to compare the lighter in my Boxster to see if that illuminated, trouble is I have taken it out and now cannot find the thing, I use the cigarette socket to trickle charge my Boxster battery.
Speaking of trickle charging batteries, that is one thing you cannot do with the 3.2 as the lighter socket is not permanently live, I had to run a connection from the battery terminals for my charger.

Cheers Paul.
