Clacking lifter

Hi I’ve just done an oil change on my 951 put new oil in fired her up a couple of times to circulate and get the level right with no problem, that was a week ago I’ve not run her again until today, now I’ve got a clacking lifter. So the question is whats the chance of it going away if I leave the engine ticking over for a while? Or any other suggestions please.

What are the old and new oils?
If you drive your car around gently the loud lifter may eventually fill up and the loud noise may disappear. If it does not then you need to replace it. It can take some driving until the noise goes aways.
 
Sounds like you have gone far to thin,

the lifter will shut up eventually, one of mine took nearly 20mins
 
If you are happy that it is the lifter then as the others said, drive it around and it should clear. How long this takes is unknown...a piece of string comes to mind but should clear within 20 mins or so. Mine had this about a month ago after not being used...cleared after 10 mins...I decided to flush the system and renewed oil/filter anyway. I ask ' if you are happy it's a lifter' as to tell a little story many years ago I had what I thought was a stuck lifter, even if a little loud, it did eventually clear. Much later I found the real cause which was a chunk of ceramic isolator casing which had broken off no. 2's iridium spark plug which then got broken up between head and piston until the remains where presumably expelled through the exhaust. This had no effect on performance as the car still gave the highest BHP of any car at the dyno run later that very day. Only one power run was performed due to a hesitation felt at WOT which of course was due to the damaged plug, not known at the time. Back then some dyno's refused to run with iridium plugs for this very reason, things have changed now as branded iridium plugs are easily available, back when these plugs were new there was a lot of bad ones about.

Anyway, just a story to say that its not always the lifter but still most likely to be.

Interesting story on the Iridium plugs, thanks. Do you remember what brand of plugs you were using at the time?

So far so good with NGKs, touch wood...

Alas I can not, this was very early days for iridium plugs, they were not a well known brand that's for sure. Nothing wrong with NGK, I use those today, IIRC one grade colder than normal.

Just fired up the old girl expecting the ”clack” but bingo she’s cured herself over night ??

My car was off the road for 4 years and when I first started it up, I had a few noisy lifters. After about 20 miles of gentle driving it eventually quietened down.

It is off the road again now, but the engine is getting rebuilt before I turn the key again :ROFLMAO:
 
I had a lifter pre-rebuild that got a litltle noisy when it warmed up! Got a batch of decent used ones when doing my rebuild, played a bit of lifter roulette and picked the best ones. All quiet now. The old ones are still in a box, 7 of them are good, couldn't tell you which 7 though..............:ROFLMAO:
