What a turn up, Porsche recommending a 10w60 lubricant for our cars. The same rating as the fully synthetic Castrol RS 10w60 I used when I first bought my car. Meantime, I have been less than loyal to my old brand champion now that I have my car serviced at my local PC where Mobil 0w/40 is the mainstay. Just had an annual service and 0w/40 was used again despite acknowledgement of the the new Porsche lubricant. Cannot complain because the Mobil 0w40 product is very good indeed, not having to top up between services despite some spirited driving in Germany. It will still attain the published VMax. The PC made one advisory note, minimal weeping from the chain case cover. Just the thing the new Porsche Classic oil should overcome. Porsche publicity puff references the less than today's fine engine build tolerances, but good at the time of the air cooled engines, which enable zero viscosity lubricants to escape.
Time marches on and changes arrive. Now that my local PC has become part of a national motor group different personnel have changed the climate somewhat. The price tag not withstanding it is more VW than Ferry Porsche. Inevitable I suppose, but sad all the same. Probably most new owners of Porsche cars are badge hounds rather than technical engineering and driving enthusiasts in the historical sense. Despite this I was pleased and re-assured to meet one of two long standing engineers who served their time on our cars at the PC. They know their way around our classics.
Off to Strasbourg shortly to clear the old girls lungs and revel in the sound of a flat six at play. The same could be said of the driver!
Have fun now the sun is shining.
Richard.
