This was the 9th edition of this annual event and has become a fixture in the calendar for enthusiasts of the early cars. Anyone who is fortunate enough to own a 356 should get themselves along to it - over 60 did this year , and these 356's represented only a fraction of the classic Porsches that Fred Hampton and his team had assembled on the day. With Richard Attwood , 1970 Le Mans winner being a guest at the event , it was only natural that the 917 should be centre stage , and Jurgen Barth was along to give it a trundle around the castle grounds......
This year's focus was celebrating fifty years since production of the 356 effectively finished - only a few more were assembled in 65/66. A long stream of 356s in ( mostly) historical order wound its way in a parade down from the castle keep and then back up again , and this was only the first of a sequence of Porsche parades in the afternoon.
I bought a '64 car earlier this year - a well cared for 'C' just visible to the left of the 917- and such is the emotional attachment that these cars engender , its previous owner travelled all the way down from the Scottish Borders on Sunday morning to be reunited with it . I actually owned a '63 car ( B S90) in same Bali Blue colour between 1968- 1980 but that is another tale.
I was lucky enough to meet up with John Ruston and have a peek in the engine compartment of his Ruby Red Carrera 2.....I don't think I'm ever going to afford a 4 cam car with a Porsche badge and stay married but it is good to see that people can !
Last words - personal thanks to the organising team , to the Castle owners , the Club , Porsche Classic , the sponsors , the traders , and the important food and drink suppliers - brilliant !
