Clay Bar Lubricant

Can anyone suggest a suitable alternative lubricant for clay bar?
The one supplied with the Autoglym (or other) pack runs out long before the clay itself.
 
There are many on the market here are a couple of examples for you.

Meguiars Quick detailer or Sonus glyde.

If you use Bilt Hamber Clay you can use water instead of a Lube but add a touch of shampoo into a spay bottle mixed in for better glide.
Important you use plenty of Lube when claying to avoid scratching and marring.

You could just use water as a Clay bar Lube. One of the reasons that Clay Bar comes with a Lube (ours is Swissvax Paint Rubber and the Lube is called quick finish), is that a very popular use for Clay bars (in our Swissvax world) is on light aircraft and helicopters, and to work on this type of machine you must use a lube that does not conduct electricity, and so it is made purely with water from steam (not just de-ionised), this does not conduct electricity and risk causing damage to elecrtonic equipment on helicopters or aircraft. For a motor vehicle you do not need the specific lube, you will find the lube does a better job than plain water, as the lube has some wax enhancers in it, which begins to add some luster to the paint finish, but you should be able to manage with tap water (or bottled water, if your in a hard - water area).

I use the Bilt Hamber clay bar with soapy water as a lube. It doesn`t add anything, but certainly removes anything stuck to the car. Follow this up with layers of Meguirs polish then wax. Does the trick for me[:)]

To Clay Bar a 996 should take approx 20 minutes. After washing and drying the car as normal, you would then spray Clay Bar Lube (Swissvax Quick Finish) on a panel, then glaze over with a piece of Clay (Swissvax Pain Rubber) approx 50mmm in diameter, including lenses and glass. Then wipe each panel dry, before going onto polish and wax. I could just see my team of engineers claying my Lynx helo on the back of a Royal Navy frigate !! (PS I am now retired from the RN)

I can just see the Captains face when I say 'Sorry Captain sir - you taxi is not yet ready but as soon as we have clayed it we need to finish with carnuba wax! I'll get back to you in a few days when it's done'! Lol.

Seriously though all we did to protect it from the elements was a fresh water wash and a daily wipe with WD40.

I am a valeter and detailer I find 20 mintues a bit optimistic to say the least to
do a thorough job on a 996 and the car will need rewashing again after claying.
Maybe Andrew has a turbo charged clay bar [:D]
 
Be warned though. After you clay bar your car (because it does such a good job) the paint imperfections show up so much more that although your car may look better in one sense it will also look worse!
 
As Rodney says above, depending on the quality of the paintwork, you may well find that after claying and re-washing your car, you will then find yourself thinking that some paint renovation with one of the many paint restorers is in order. I got into this lark 3-4 years ago with my 968 coupe - which I thought I'd looked after over the years by regularly washing then polishing with AG SRP. Spent a morning washing, claying, rewashing, then used AG Bodyshop 02B on the front wing, and could not believe the difference. That wing was now proper Guards Red, where the rest of the car had a slighly dull purple tinge. Lots of elbow grease and time later, the whole car was the proper colour, and a DA polisher went on my Xmas list!
 
As noted in my post, it can take "Approx" 20 mins to Clay Bar a 996, it could take a little longer, but if one of my team takes 3 hours to Clay Bar a 996, then he needs to find a new job ! Also worth noting that in our detailing centres, and with our 30 mobile Swissvax Detailers, we never re-wash the car after the Clay Bar stage.

Peter, just reading your comments on helicopters made me remember recently three of us fully detailing a Citation Jet in Bournemouth, and me getting the short-straw and having to sit on the main fuselage and sliding along trying not to slip off ! I'll stick to cars in future !

Bilt Hamber do a clay bar designed to work with water. I've used it and very pleased with the results. Think you can buy their stuff on line from opie oils or direct.
 
This can be true Rodney, if you want to mask some of the imperfection after claying
you could use something like poor boys black hole glaze works well on darker colours.
But remember to seal it in after with a sealant or wax.
Otherwise next wash or shower will wash away the poor boys as it contains fillers.
Poor boys is not a remedy just helps mask some imperfections.
You dont want it machined every time a few swirls and imperfections appear
which water based paints are prone too.
 
I just use a capful of car wash mixed with water in a spray bottle as a lubricant. That's what Zaino recommend, and it works well for me.
