Cleaning AFM contacts in situ?

Hi all

I think I need to clean my AFM contacts (and possibly adjust the wiper arm position) to cure a slight hesitancy under acceleration. On looking at Clark's Garage, it recommends removing the airbox and mounts, disconnecting the various pipes and electrical connectors and taking out the airbox and AFM combined. But after all that, the black cover of the AFM just seems to be removed by cutting the silicone sealant bead and lifting the cover off. Can this not just be done on the car? (Avoiding removing potentially rusty bolts, potentially breaking electrical connectors etc.) Am I missing something here?

Thanks.

Well I did on my Rover Vitesses many years ago to adjust the Barn Door spring -also our grey 924S for the same reason-just move the spring end a notch or 2.

You'll probably struggle to get the black cover off in situ, if its anything like on my S. It was a real pain to remove. Much easier removing it, takes a couple of mins and you can then work inside under some decent light

Its not a hard job to remove it but you can leave it attached to the airbox and take the whole thing out. Far fewer bolts then.

Thanks chaps.

I'll try taking the whole thing out, and if I run into problems I'll try just taking the cover off and leaving the rest in place.

I've done this job. Take the AFM out. I promise you this will make life easier. Getting the pointer lined up on the track is fiddly. You don't want to be stooped over the engine doing this.
