Cleaning engine.

IMO............I used gunk on the 964 with a paint brush on a lightly warmed gas mark 2 engine, let it sit for a bit, aggitate dirty bits a few times then gentle water from a hose pipe then car shampoo as per bodywork then rinse again.
Cross fingers tightly, start the car to dry the engine and take for a spin to totally dry then use whatever you want on it for the shine.
Pic attached was a very dirty engine when i first got it [;)]

Agree with Elliot re: Gunk. The underneath of my engine had many years of oil and dirt built up on it from various small oil leaks (thankfully now fixed with new oil return tubes etc.).

I used a couple of small spray cans of Gunk, as this allowed me to lie by the car (lightly warmed) and spray the whole of the underside of the engine and gearbox. Wait for a while and then rinse and shampoo as described above.

The allow comes up nice and clean, although I haven't needed to do this to the top of the engine.

I use "Autoglym Engine and Machine Clean"; agitate with a brush then jet wash it off. Don't aim at the distributor cap, go round it or cover it in clingfilm if you're unsure.

While the engine is still wet, spay "Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care" all over the entire engine. Close the lid and leave for 30 minutes.

Now you have a beautiful clean engine with all the black, rubber and metal components looking like new, not to mention the engine bay its self!

Couldn't be simpler![:D]

Dont wish to be a doom & gloom merchant....but please be careful... there has been other comments raised in past threads which cast a word of warning about removing protective layers of coatings applied by the factory to engine & transmissions casings...through too much energetic scrubbing to appease the eye for cosmetic purposes.

I to, want to clean up my engine...this is a Spring project as opposed to Winter....but will not be too heavy handed in the application.

Anyone with any further points to add?

If you want to protect your engine Tectyl is the product you need , it provides a heat proof wax coating, see my pics below.

The guy who runs Eporsch, Roly Baldwin, has a cunning engine cleaning method. My C4 engine was beautiful when I collected the car, and it certainly wasn't that when I first viewed it. Can't remember what he said he used, but I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you - 01932 569844.
