Can you please give me some adviced.

Having sold my 996 I went and bought a 1971 Alfa Remeo Spider (does have a Porsche made gear box).

I was wondering if they is a any tips on washing old cars and looking after the paint work.

Many thanks

Gary

As it is an Alfa I would be worried about introducing it to any water at all [:D]

good luck with it

Well its probably had some paint at some point, so there's no guarantee it'll be the harder solvent based paint of old rather than soft water based paint.

A lot depends on what condition its in, ie how much oxidation or scratches/swirls.

Good thorough wash, clay bar, and then the Meguiars Body Scrub or stage 1 paint cleaner, stage 2 polish and finally a good coat of Meguiars Gold class wax shoudl be sufficient to get it looking pretty good. For heavier oxidation and scratches you might want to experiment with Scratch-X before the body scrub stage.

Theres a million and one products on offer, but Meguiars are pretty good when it comes to price, ease of use and results.

I think the problem is they have so much water they throw most of it away [:)]

I think the problem in the South is they have so much water they throw most of it away....[:)] I went sailing on the local reservoir last weekend, and did not run aground at all....

Sounds odd . . . but I try not to wash mine too much. Water does result rust and wiping causes minute scratches.

When I do clean it I make sure it's bone dry before putting it away. A quality wax applied say 3 times a years nourishes and protects the paint IMHO.

About twice a car I take off all the wheel and clean the wheels arches and underside.

I clean the interior with a damp cloth.

clean all my car the same way regardless of age. once totally clean they are coated with several layers of a very good quality wax. after that just use plain water to wash car with and buff dry.
only need to re-apply or top up the wax about 6-7 a year depending on usage.

for leather inside i strongly recommend cleaning then conditioning with a good make of cleaner to keep the leather supple and stop it cracking.
