Cleaning the exhaust

If they are really black:-
1) Wash down with soapy water
2) Take either soft brown cardboard and apply metal polish to cardboard prior to rubbing on exhaust or
3) Take the finest wire wool you buy apply metal polish to wire wooll and do a test patch where it wont bee seen.
4) When you are happy with 2) 3) above apply metal polish with soft cloth and buff to gleaming finish. [8D]
P.S. If yo can remover the tips from the car it makes the job that much easier

Autosol is your friend, along with some vigorous buffing.
Yeah 2nd that and lots of elbow grease. []
I used some very fine wet/dry rubbing paper (similar to emery paper but finer) with warm soapy water, after a few attempts removed most of the carbon, obviously don't use this method if your tips are polished stainless.
Once I was happy with the finish, I used Autosol to finish the job.
