Cleaning the inside of 993 Headlamp

did this recently, but to share the experince, I know this may have been on before.. but it's new to me !

and WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT .... although prob' how dirty the inside was !

my headlamps have been awful ! e.g. motorway drive up to the midlands at night = it is like I have my side lights on from old TT ! enough times I had to resort to driving with my fog lights on just to see the road at night... on the motorways I normally just follow the lines..!

and there have been enough time when I driven onto an un-lit road and I've actually had to check to see if my headlamps were actually on !

well.. the headlamps were simple enough to remove (as we know) and a bit fiddly to open up (rather minor cuts on my fingers!) but simple enough.... just a case of opening up all of the side clips....

I can't believe how dirty the side was ! and how on earth does that happen ! after all the reflector and lamps were all clean !

although when I cleaned the whole thing once... it was only the low beam section that needed a real good clean again to make sure it was spotless ....as that's the one that REALLY matters !

the result was the headlamp were much improved (still no xenons!) to such an extent that it almost felt like I had my fogs lights on as well !

so cruising back down the m40 last night.. I could actually see where I was going !and a bit of headlamp re-alignment will sort it out fully !

a very recommended part of 'self maintenance' for any 993 driver.....[:D]

all I need now it to find th right part to adjust the headlamps !

So you can finally see where you're going [:D]

You should find that info. in the drivers manual, but before you start adjusting the screws inside the booth area, there should be a switch inside the headlamp unit, for setting LHD roads or RHD roads. if that doesn't correct your alignment issue, then adjust the vertical and lateral, I would advise taking it to a MOT station for this to be done correctly.

yep !

plus the fact I couldn't see anything in the dark ! [:(]

xenon are still due for sometime this year...[:-]

Just cleaned mine today, after fitting the updated bulb holder clips (see Maurice's note in last month's PP).

...on the same theme can anyone explain how to remove the fog lights and the glass lens (they ar looking a bit dull/yellow'ish and I though I would have a go at cleanuing them or possibly replace the glass - if this is an option?).

Thanks

Hi Sundeep

Good thread - got me thinking. I've been disappointed with the performance of our lights from when we got the car - and its got Xenons on both dip & main!! Took a light to bits and whilst not particularly dirty inside lens, the lens is obviously original with 90,000 miles of peppering with bricks etc.

1. Any alternatives to ordering new lenses from an OPC?
2. Any way of safely cleaning the reflectors - meths on cotton buds perhaps?? I know
about the dangers of getting oils from skin on bulbs and this, I believe, also applies to
reflectors.
3. The supplier of the Xenons is at the other end of the country so I can't just pop in for
them to have a look. Is there anything that is adjustable or do they either "work"
or "not work at all"? Any ideas out there? Thanks.

from what I recall when I changed over my fog light, the unit has the glass is sealed using the plastic design.. so in theory you can undo the pressure points.... might have to have a go with one of mine is also going a bit yellow.. although I've prob' wait till it is a bit warmer....

bad xenons ! don't tell me that !!! I'm thinking of getting them.. maybe I should also put secondary xenons as driving lamps in the fog light position ???!

new lenses, prob' other places that can still supply them new, after all they are made by Bosch... which will give that new crystal look....

as for cleaning them, aything will prob' do, just make sure you stay away from the bulb !

they should be adjustable, from the last xenon thread I posted, there were a few responses IIRC about how to adjust xenon kits that were not OEM...

Maurice, I've got a receipt from CA Automotive, London for 2 x H1 Ultravision HID Xenon kits for £890 inc in Jan '03 - phew!!! There seams to be a "mini powerstation" for each beam on each inner wing. Start up time on high beam is SLOW to the extent that you can hardly tell the difference! Laura says it gets better with use! How do you ever use the headlights "constantly" on high beam in this country - there is always some bugger coming the other way - or getting in my way!! Alignment was checked at last service 6 months ago. Any more info needed?

Thanks

Very helpful - thanks Maurice.

No problem with doing alignment like you suggest. I used to do this with my Lotus 7 (in a previous lifetime) after every MOT!

Now seeing I'm such a lucky chap and happy to perhaps bin £400+ of someone elses mod, can I scrap the high beam bit of my system and go to, say, xenon filled bulbs or something that will rearly maximise the 20% efficiency on offer - without spending another £400?!! Cheers.

I presume my throw away bits will be great for someones dip beam?? Any offers Sundeep???

Maurice - see you at Brands in August and I will buy you a pint and we can talk Lotus 7 adventures - for 10 minutes!!

Cheers

c o u l d be interested..... [:-]

or might still try a Group buy of new kits at about £200 a set....(?)

Sundeep,

I am also considering a Xenon upgrade... but am useless with DIY/mechanical things... I have spoken to Maurice for advice, and I have had many different quotes from various reputable Porsche independents.. i am still confused!

I like the idea of multi buy though[:D]

...but i couldnt fit it myself[:(]

JP

based on those post, there are 3 different types on the market, all do the same end job, but different fitting and beam adjustment methods...... still trying to work out the best type.......

and curious to see if I could put one as a secondary driving light in the fog light position !

Hi Sundeep, most people wire driving lights to come on with main beam. Bearing in mind Maurice's comments about Xenons working best if they are on constantly you might find the same problem as we have with our main beam headlights. This is why we are considering going back to standard type for our main beam but keeping xenon for dip. If we are wrong on this, I'm sure M will pick it up and comment?

xenons (as on my previous car) did take about 3 seconds to start up and about 5 seconds before they were fully illuminated...

although no experince of after market keits, but assume they are the same ?

Sundeep

If you are thinking about a bulk purchase of xenons--I would certainly be interested--please keep us informed.

Many thanks

DITTO!

well I finally got around to fitting a pair of HID Xenons that I bought from ebay after 4 months...!! £200 for the H1 set...

although I have been waiting to borrow a 22mm drill bit from a friend ! well that is my 4 month delay excuse anyway!

but once I had figured out how to merge the earth wires (10 minutes) then fitting took all of 20 minutes !

just awaiting the darkness to see the real result !
