cleaning the wheels on my 997 C4S

Hi everyone,
I took delivery of my basalt black 997 C4S with aerokit nearly two weeks ago. It really needs a clean which I will be doing this weekend. I have my Zymol Glasur kit and can't wait!!

In terms of cleaning the wheels, when I took delivery, they were spotless - but no longer. With the wheels on the car, I don't think I'll be able to get through to the insides to sufficiently clean and apply with the Zymol wheel wax/coating product. Should I take the wheels off to clean them?? If I do this, once I put them back on, will my tracking and alignment need re-checking???

Yeh, take them off to apply the wax. NO effect to geometry, provided you use the correct jacking points on the car.

The bad news is that Porsche do not supply a jack. I purchased a 996 one from a breakers, as new from a one year old 996 4S, perfec![;)] While I was at it I purchased a space saver spare wheel as well, but that's another issue.
 
FC on the RTM!! They don't supply a jack!!! OK. Must find jack! Can there really be a specific jack for the car, surely a jack is a jack??!
 
Any reasonably low trolley jack will do. Halfrauds 2.5 tonner works on my 996 C4S. (Cue debate as to whether a jacking plate is needed)

Geoff is talking about a scissor jack for keeping in the car for roadside use - I'd rather stick to OEM Porsche for that. Not a problem for me, though [;)]

Don't forget - with the wheels off, it's a good opportunity to clean the ventilation holes on the brake discs. [:)]
 
The Porsche jack is a conventional scissor type but with an additional peg sticking up, which locates into the jacking point. You could always choose to get a cheap trolly jack and add protective pad of rubber or similar. Check out other threads on this forum with search facility. I chose to purchase a 996 jack because of its size so that it can be carried in the car at all times along with the space saver wheel.

Use a decent trolly jack and using the rear jacking point only you can take both front and rear off at the same time (on the same side of course)

A big thanks to you all for giving me your thoughts and opinions. This has been a big help. This weekend, weather permitting, I will be Zymol-ing my car and taking the wheels off for a good clean and Zymol coat.

how much should a good trolley jack cost? i'm looking at toolstation.com and they are showing a 1.5t lifting capacity trolley jack for £13.62????? I expected it to be more....
 
Machine Mart have Clarke (mid quality) jacks from £20-£80. But some of these may not fit under a 997, which has the ride height of a tractor compared to my GT3. So to avoid having to drive the car on to a block to jack it measure the clearence from ground to door cill and jacking point and make sure the jack you buy fits.

The very low nose jacks to fit under RS's GT3's etc tend to be over £100.

so it sounds like i need a low profile jack. seen some of those around the £100 mark. if it says its low profile, do you think it will do the job, or should i play it safe and measure up as you say....
 
My RAC branded one (£20 from Argos) just about fits unde rmy PASM equipped 987 - enough room to slide a rubber / foam pad in.

Its not the most exotic but works just fine for 6 monthly wheel removal

Word of warning, I had a £20 trolley jack collapse on first use approx 1 min after wheel was removed. Car fell onto the jack and crushed the aero skirt. I was fortunate that jack manufacturer has stumped up for repair costs (in at Shorade right now).

I have been looking to obtain a space saver wheel that would be appropriate for 19" wheels for a little while now.
If you don't mind me asking, where did you source yours from and roughly how much was it?
I am waiting for a response from Douglas Valley breakers at the moment, as I don't have much faith in Porsche's can of industrial strength hair mousse![&:]
Any info appreciated.

thanks. i've gone for something a little more expensive for piece of mind. but we'll see how effective it is. i think i'll jack it up and down a bit to test how robust it is.

I am about to jack my car up to get the wheels off for cleaning.

Is there a separate axle stand point to additionally support the car in the event of trolley jack failure ( this happened to me also on my M3, luckily I had just put the wheel back on the hub when it collapsed ! ).

Also, how necessary is it to shield the jack from the jacking point with something ? The jacking plate you can buy from the Porsche shop is nearly £30, thats more than the jack costs !

Not tried the rear jacking point but my Halfords jack doesnt fit under the front one.

If you jack the car up on the rear point it will lift the front wheel of the ground as well so as you can change both wheels without moving the jack. I have a spare set of wheels for track use and this saves a lot of time moving jack etc
