Hi all,

First proper post, I have been a viewer of the forum for years and owed 2 boxsters and 4 911's, currently a 996 Turbo.

I have been lucky enough to have the car selected for show at the brands hatch Turbo evolution stand in September and have decided the car has to be A1. It is going for a full front end respray to clear stone chips and an all over check for chips, machine polish, I am considering having the calipers refurb end also but mulling that over.

My question here is after all that - what is the recommended wax to make it shine? I have autoglym hd wax, seems good, is it worth getting anything else? Any cleaning hints and tips for a great finish, interior and exterior greatly appreciated. Car is seal grey with black leather if that makes a difference?

Cheers

Sorry, newbie error - just seen a cleaning forum, can this be moved if needed please. Thanks.

Hi

I had my 997 detailed a few months ago, 3 stage machine polish followed by G-Technic to all surfaces inside and out. the result fantastic!! Changed the colour, swirl free and best of all feels like a new car[:D]

All the best JP.

Cheers JP - after the respray it's getting a machine polish - I will then wax to give extra protection - really like the high gloss / wet look - any idea which kind of wax gives this?

Heck yeah! That's the job, mine was like that when I purchased, I have not been able to replicate. Based in Cheshire so see you a bit far to recommend the company that did your car. Looks great [:)]

I'm no expert here but my car won it's class at the Region 17 Concourse this year.

I followed the instructions in the three part series in the Car Care section of this forum. More than anything I think the preparation work is far more important than the final wax that you use. Preparing the car was really hard work, that seemed to go on for weeks, it could have caused a divorce! By all accounts the quality of the wax makes a greater difference on dark colours, which seems to stand to reason. My car is Basalt Black which looks really great when its polished, but is a nightmare to keep clean.

I used a 3M Clay Bar (bought on ebay), Meguiar's Scratch X II polish (Halfords) and Zymol Glasur Glaze Wax (purchased from John's Wax with 10% club discount).

I have no experience of any other wax, but this works for me and I love putting it on by hand. I invested in a Zymol Microwipe polishing cloth which seems to work well.

Pretty well everything else I use is Autoglym (I seem to have amassed quite a collection).

Shampoo Conditioner
Leather Cleaner
Leather Care Balm
Interior Shampoo
Engine & Machine Cleaner - Used for engine compartment and wheel arches
Vinyl & Rubber Care (used inside and out, I also use this under the wheel arches and on the pedals too)
Fast Glass

Now the car is up and together, keeping it looking good is relatively easy. My biggest problem is keeping the wheels clean. I invested in a tub of Swissvax Autobahn Wheel Wax, which I was hoping would reduce the build-up of break-dust and make cleaning easier. To be honest I haven't found it's made a lot of difference, the jury is still out.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your help guys. Lots of elbow grease needed when it comes back from the respray! Will be well worth it.

Cheers.

Mine's also been selected for the display, 996 Turbo as well. You've got me thinking about a front end respray now. Don't want to be embarrassed alongside your pristine example! I'll see you there.

Ha ha - I became paranoid as soon as I was selected and looked at chips away etc but thought it easier to have a front end respray - done and dusted then - the guys it is going to are also sorting any minor issues on the sides e.g a small chip near the intake on the rear arch - just part and parcel of the shape of the car and using it regularly. Also thinking of having the calipers refurbed whilst it's off the road as they have some fading.

Look forward to seeing you there. Cheers, Andrew
