Clicking noise from centre console when door opens

Used to get something similar on my 986, narrowed it down to the stereo doing funny things when the car was unlocked & door opened. Sounded like a CD stuck in the mechanism. Occasionally the stereo wouldn't work & would only turn on if the car was switched off & on again.

Never got to the bottom of it as shortly after it had started doing it the car was written off by an idiot in a transit van that couldn't be bothered to check his mirrors.
 
Many thanks boxtercol! Wondered about air sensor so took stereo and dash out to hoover pipes behind. Funnily it hasn't happened since. But that could just be the stereo being unplugged and rebooting.
