Clicking Noise

Lately there has been a clicking/ tapping noise from the engine. Sounds almost like the tappets, but they are hydraulic. The engine oil has just been changed after only 2000 miles. If it was the spark plugs arcing surely I would get a misfire? It is not really important, but just one of those annoying things that keep you awake.

Does it do it all the time?

The tappets can still get noisy even though they are hydraulic either through being blocked or worn.

it could be the tappets. mine were new about 8k miles ago, and they click. as do my fuel rails due to the aftermarket fuel system i have pulsing. If you are secure in the knowledge that your belts have been serviced properly, and the oil you used is up to the job (have a search on here if you're worried) then don't lose any more sleep.....

anyway, a failed tappet will probably give you really bad running issues, so if it isn't running bad, then no real panic. hell, an old VW of mine ran for 6 months with a bad tappet. I just had to put up with lower mileage, a bit of soot, and some funny comments from "friends" who kept asking me about the beetle engine swap i'd done!

What oil grade do you use ?

...... cant remember if it was the 0w30, or 10w40. my memory's bad!

You're not wrong [;)]. Mobil 1 comes in either 0w-40 or 15w-50. [:D]

Not wishing to be the harbinger of doom but Flamingeye had a clicking noise which turned out to be his cam link chain and cam sprockets destroying themselves. Nasty mess with plenty of small bits in the engine to find subsequently.[]

[:D] have I started a war criticising your blue lights John!? It was 3am when I posted, and I didn't feel like going out to the garage! [:D]

Well it does liven up the forum. [:D] No worries Mike. I thought I won on the blue lights issue though. [:D]

WHAT!? get your helmet ready John...... [:D]

The noise does die down during driving conditions, but I hope it isnt the cam chain and sprockets. Even if it isnt the tappet, I will probably have to remove the head just to be safe than sorry?! Now, I just stuck in some oil which I was told could help with the age of the car.......20W50. As you have stated 0W40 and 15W50, I am now a bit worried. Please calm my thoughts.

If you ask me a 20W50 (roughly the same as 15W50) will always be much better than a 0W40, as long as the quality of the oil is good.

I'd go along with that. 0W40 doesn't stay in the engine long enough to degrade though. [:D]

Last oil change I did I replaced the filter with the billet style filter and RP oil...result was a disconcerting loud ticking on start up that lasted about thirty seconds...after a week it went away, Apparently the valve lifters can be a bit sticky if a bit of "sludge" gets dislodged.

Rover V8 engines have incredable sticky hydraulic tappets. The engine will start with only a percentage of the cylinders taking part and can get a mile down the road before they all join in. [:)]
