Clicking odometer trip

Quick one this. I got the S2 back from Camtune yesterday and the car feels much better, which is a relief given the size of the bill.

Anyway I have now noticed that the trip is stuck between 10.9 miles and 11.0 and the reset button doesn't appear to want to make it reset. I have only reset it once before, the day I got it (10 days ago) and so I know it has worked. Is there a common problem here that can be easily fixed or shall I just turn up the stereo to drown out the clicking?[;)]

Thanks.

There's two main possibilities: Either the odometer gear has stripped/smashed, which happens if somebody tries to reset it whilst the car is moving "¦ or the instrument pod has been taken out and the odometer switch wasn't put back in the right place when the pod was replaced.

The former is a bugger to fix, and you're best off replacing the speedo (or can order new plastic gears from the US here, but fitting is difficult).

The latter is dead simple. Eight screws to take out the plastic surround that contains your air vents, then you'll see a little black box clipped on to some wires sitting to the left of the instrument pod. That little box has the odometer reset switch on one face of it, and should be mounted against the metal plate (it has two studs to locate into corresponding holes in the metal). Once it's in the right place, when you put the plastic surround back on, the odometer reset button will line up properly with the actual switch.

For more detail, Clark's Garage has step-by-step instructions on all the above.

link doesn't work on clarkes site . You need the `Garage shop manual' then `speedo' to save loads of searching .
Mines bust too dammit

Or "˜Garage shop manual' and then "˜odometer' "¦ or "˜Gauge removal' "¦ there's a few there which are relevant, so I just linked to the homepage.

how did you get on James ? I need to do this job myself some time soon. I have to keep a mileage log for work and it would be handy to have the trip working.[;)]

Would you believe I couldn't find a stubby screwdriver to get the final screw out (the one that sits above the steering wheel) but I have one now so will try it again this Friday. In the end I cleaned it and took some photos instead.

Heh. First time around, I had to drive to B&Q for a stubby screwdriver before I could start. I've now popped out the instrument cluster so many times that I've got it down to a twenty minute job to remove and re-fit.

Ok guys, here's my update on this. My stubby screwdriver was flat, so a trip to B&Q for a posidrive one and did the job in their car park. In the end, as a previous poster mentioned, the black switch had become dislodged so the reset pin wasn't hitting the spot so to speak. Since a picture speaks a thousand words here's the before and after:

If only all fixes were this easy. So it's now held with a tiny dab of superglue and I'm very pleased that I don't have to rebuild the internal mechanisms. Anyway since it had stuck at 10.9 miles, I then had to go for a drive just to check that it wouldn't stick again so if you saw a black S2 in East Sussex today, that was probably me [;)]
