climate control - full heat

hi, im doing a track day at donnington tommorow (friday)[:D] and my climate control has decided to stick on at full heat[:mad:], i have looked under the bonnet and i beleive that i have found the valve that would direct the hot water from the block to the heater matrix (this is a plastic unit in between the engine and the bulk head with a thin green plastic pipe coming off it - it has a sliding arm of sorts that comes from the water pipework to the green pipe this is marked auf <-> zu) what i am thinking of doing is setting this to either 'auf' or 'zu' (off / on OR hot / cold?) can anyone tell me if this sounds like a good or bad idea.

The system is designed to fail on full heat. Look behind the glovebox and to the right, you should see some levers connected with a plastic part. This snaps and the flaps fail to open.

thanks for that advice diver i have just tied a cable-tie around the flap end and fed it out thru a gap in the glove box giving me some sort of control - much better than my idea!.

Damn! I just called and it is a morning half day. If it was this afternoon I would have seen you there.

There is a full day on Sunday for anyone interested. £140 if booked today and there are spaces available. This will be a sessioned day
 
it was only a haf day but that suited me for my first time also there were only 6 cars on the track 3 caterhams a 205gti an old shape mr2 and a radical so being as it was open pit i was able to come in and out a good few times and i didnt have to keep a constant eye on the mirrors, but i dont know if ill be able to make another soon as im gonna have to fix the new noise ive brought home with me still it was well worth it.

I wish I'd spotted that sooner. Here I was 40 miles away in glorious weather with nothing to do [:mad:]

at the end of the day it started making a sort of clicking noise on the right bends (and almost a bearing like whine) it wasnt however that prominent on the drive home.
I have not had time to take the wheel off on that side yet but im hoping a brief inspection will find something loose/worn if not ill have to let the garage have a look.
By the way it is incredibley low and i know that on old vw campers (they share the same rear end set-up) that were substantialy lowered it plays havoc with the drive shafts - as lowering it can cause the joints to be pulled apart and altough they have been changed in its recent history im wondering if that may be the problem i am however thinking of doing more track days so i suppose this may 'force[;)]' me to get a proper set up
 
Funny you should mention the driveshafts because when they start to wear you do hear a clicking noise from the rear. When its really bad it will be constant, not just round corners.

You can loosen the rubber boot and repack with grease, or remove the shaft and reverse it so that the wheel side joint is now by the gearbox and vice versa. They can then give many more years use before that side wears and you need to replace the shaft itself.
 
the swapping round of the drive shafts and repacking of grease is definately reminiscent of the old camper problem so it looks like ill give that a look at some stage this week
