Climate Control Noise When Turning On Ignition

I have noticed recently noises coming from behind the PCM screen when turning on the ignition that lasts for a few seconds, also I get this same noise when pressing one of the Climate control buttons to change distribution of airflow.

Is this normal or is it a sign that the climate control mechanism that controls the airflow distribution is failing?

I had this noise on my 981 occasionally but it doesn't seem to happen any more. It was noticed by the OPC once when the car was fairly new but nothing was done.

I think its the bearings on the fan that are starting to wear/ cease.

Mine does it sometimes, does your car sit for a while for extended periods?

I find if you turn the fans up higher than normal you can get the fans spinning and settling down better.

Seems to make more noise at lower speeds when it happens on mine.

After turning the fans up for a bit everythings fine.

Seems a common issue on these cars.

If you take out the 2 cabin filters (one under the dash and the other under the bonnet) and see if they have anything stuck in them. Also, when checking the filter under the bonnet, you might be able to reach in behind the filter and turn the fan. It has been know for a rogue leaf to get in there somehow and cause a noise.

Mark,

Since you have climate control I’m sure that, as you’ve suggested, it’s just the servo-controlled valves and flaps on the HVAC system either resetting in line with the ambient temperature (which most likely will be different from when you last used the car) or when you change the settings manually.

Probably no cause for concern if the system is regulating the temperature correctly and there’s no noticeable change in the pattern of sounds over time.

I think you are spot on Jeff.

Just don't remember noticing it to this degree in 3.5 years of ownership. Maybe it's me and it's been like it all along!

I'll mention it to my OPC next time it goes in for anything, just in case.

Thanks, Mark
