Climate Control Unit (CCU)

I believe I have a problem with the CCU as I get various mixtures or warm & cold air out of different vents (ie hot on the left & cold on the right or hot out the screen vent and cold in the footwells) combined with erratic temperature control.

The question is where is the CCU and how can one test it? Also anybody got any ideas of repair (exchange units) or replacement costs?

Kind regards
Anton

Hi

What you should do is get the diagnostic analyser on the car, list the faults and then clear them all, then after a couple of hours driving recheck with the diagnostic analyser. Probably one of the blower motors has gone but after a time various other things trip so a number of faults will come up. Clearing the memory and rechecking usually shows the culprit. Your local Indie should be able to help you out.

Good luck

Thanks for the input - the car's in at Northways for a clutch & 48K service next week so I'll get them to clear the fault codes and then re-check them. I'll also have a look at the servos.

Kind regards

Just to confirm what Maurice posted - I had exactly the same problem (warm air out of one set of vents, cold out of the other, etc.), and it was definitely just the servos. Replaced and all fine again.

I also noticed today that sometimes the heater appears not to respond to the temperature settings. For example, if I'm getting cold air on my side I appear to be able to solve it by cranking the temperature setting to high. Equally - ie turning the temperature down the heater doesn't always respond and keeps pumping out hot air - presumably these servos control the volume of hot air and cold air coming out of each vent.

One the car's back from it's major surgery (clutch, 48K, 4 wheel aligment - just hoping the flywheel's OK and I don't need to replace that!) I'll check the servos out first and then see what other problems are left!

Thanks again for all your help.

Kind regards
Anton

Maurice is right about the servos. I had this problem on my 964 at 100,000 miles. Classic symptoms.

Your other problem sounds like the cabin temperature sensor, which uses a lttle fan on the back of the ccu to draw air through the unit. This can get clogged up with fluff, leading to mis-readings.

I had the temperature sensor changed about 12 mths ago - thinking that was the problem - it seemed to make a difference for a short while and then the problem got worse - that's why I started to think it was the CCU. I've had a look at the servos but the layout in the article doesn't match my car - I think because I've got A/C. The car needs to go into Northway's in the next couple of weeks so I'll have a word with them before 'attacking' the servos again.

Thanks for all your help.
