I got my A/C system recharged at my last major service and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately I didn't observe the 'use it or loose it' rule with these systems and one year on it need recharging again at my next major service next week. This time I am thinking about leaving my A/C on all the time and just set the temp to a comfortable temp for the system to maintain. Will this affect the cars fuel consumption in the cooler months and days when the system is not needing to chill the air and will it keep the seals lubricted and minimise loss of refrigerant?

Cheers all.

Unfortunately yes it will - the loss in consumption is because the engine has to drive the pulley rather than how hard it's working. You'll also lose some BHP, although I'm sure you can spare a few!

The loss in MPG however is probably more than offset by the recharging it up every year!

It underwent a vacuum check at the last re-gas where they draw a vacuum on the sytem to see if it can hold the vacuum for 30 mins and mine did. Apparently this is as much for removal of moisture out of the system prior to re-gassing as much as for checking for leaks. However i'm not sure if the vacuum test is an absolute test for leaks - i'll have to ask the air con company.

I was hoping that due to the clutch that engages and disengages upon demand that unless the system is chilling the air the clutch would be disengaged and the pulley freewheeling therefore not loading the engine, but I suppose there must be another component in the system that is drawing a significant electrical current therefore loading up the alternator and still effecting your MPG. As you said though it's not a big reduction in MPG so for the sake of convenience I think i'll just leave it on.

Wash your mouth out! i'm going to have to look for another mod to make up the lost HP! Maybe i'll crank up my MBC half a bar or so!

BMW suggest that the climate on the hearse is left on all the time. I wasn't sure about that and tried it turned off for a while, but it made no appreciable difference to fuel economy and had a downside that the windows didn't stay as clear as I'm used to.

I think it works by chilling the cold air it blends with warm to achieve the desired temperature so it will run all the time when it's turned on. On the upside it hasn't needed any attention in 26,000 miles and almost a year and I have never had a problem with it making foul smells through things living in it through the winter when it's not being used.

Of course I'm not suggesting you run the 944 one all the time, though it would do no actual harm.

Hi Guys trying to get my air con working. It has been converted? and regased and the gas just leaked out over night lots of die all over the pump. Any idea where to try to get a new pump from? Paul

You could try breakers but you'll not know the condition of what you buy but could be worth a punt. I know that Promax does reconditioned A/C components so you might want to give them a try.
