clock bulb > LED

finally got round to replacing the busted clock bulb for a led. took a bit of tweaking as the moulding wasnt exactly the same; i ended up taking the LED out of the plastic housing and splaying the contacts wider. I'm happy with the result although its perhaps a bit blue; thought id ordered white but that was a few months ago.

also the dimmer no longer affects the brightness perceptibly.

Nice one Pastry - that would suit the look I have in mind for my instrument cluster - lucky I've got a spare to work on [:)]

I like the look of that alot - as and when mine goes I will look to do the same thing, plus the blue would match my Jager dash LED's and Becker radio.

That looks great. Good match for the blue instrument cluster LEDs some have. Any pics of the work as you did it?

Hi Pastry,

I did exactly the same this weekend also changed the cig lighter bulb to a bule LED. I started off cleaning the interior heating thermistor and fan also repaired the broken heating clip and ended up changing the bulbs.

Haven't had a look to see what it looks like at night yet or tested the heating!

No pics of the work sorry i just used the Clarks garage guide (http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/body-08.htm - it has pictures), i disconnected the cig lighter and hazard switch to make it easier to work on but didn't remove the clock from the dash trim or disconnect it as I needed to see if the LED lit up.

i took a pic of the bulb vs the LED to highlight the fitting problem i had;

Seems the problem is the lugs on the original are at 90 degrees to the lugs on the LED (which uses the metal contacts as lugs) and has no plastic lugs to fix it in place. Im sure the LEDs I ordered were 509t which may or may not be the same as the original. Top photos show the lug placement.

The bottom left photo shows the LED removed with the legs splayed. it gripped the clock board quite well, i pushed them home with a small flat screwdriver. then I found I could have placed the LED in the original bulb housing, if it ever stops working i'll put that one in instead.

I planned to do the dash too but the bulbs are lighting it well enough just now.

Nice work Pastry (if that is infact, your real name?!? [;)])

I had to do exactly the same when I fitted an LED to the clock in my 968:

Like you say, it is perhaps a little too blue, but it is nice being able to see the clock in the dark now, and hopefully, with it being an LED, it won't need replacing for a long, long time [:D]
