Hello All

Noticed this morning that when turning on the ignition my oil level indicator was not working, then when i started the car no clock showing when i looked at it closly i noticed that it was working but very very faintly. Has any one had this problem if so is it an easy fix and what kind of cost involved.

Thanks Phil

I had a similar problem except mine was intermittent - the oil (pressure, which I think you mean) indicator started to jump around when I was driving the car on the motorway. It would go from 3.5 bar straight down to zero and then back up again. Needless to say it wasn't an accurate reading and it turned out that the oil pressure sender unit had packed up. The sender unit is located at the top of the engine towards the back (ie nearest the the engine cover) - so it's quite easy to get to. Amazingly mine packed up at 12K miles!

I think that the units are about £30 + VAT and it took half an hour to fit by Porsche. In hindsight I'd have done the job myself as it doesn't seem too difficult.

Adrian.

On the pre-facelift cars the displays for clock/OBC/oil level were backlit with bulbs. Sounds like you have had one blow. They can be changed, but you have to remove the instrument cluster to get at them. The bulb sizes are shown in the bulb table in the 996 Technical Articles forum, but I'm not sure which of the 3 it actually is.

Adrian, it is the Clock and oil level indicator my car is a pre-face lift. Richard i think has answered it for me, i think this is somthing that can wait and go on the to do list, for service time. Just wanted to get an idea to see what it could be. Thanks for your input, and is there anything you dont know about these cars Richard?

Cheers Phil
