Clonk from rear

Occasionally people suffer from clonks at the rear which are tricky to diagnose. My car developed one yesterday, I was exiting the M5 onto the A419 putting the suspension under some heavy load, its very bumpy and reasonably tight at speed.

Anyway the car felt all wrong halfway through, and started knocking over bumps, I pulled over and in the end of the torsion bar carrier there is a bush that is visible, on the offside of my car it is breaking up. It is making the rear nervous and under certain bump loads there is a nasty knock. Looks like I might be dropping my rear beam.

Sorry to hear that Tony. Glad to hear you are safe though.
Do you have any pictures of the failiure - so we can check our cars?
I have a tapping that i think is a wheel bearing or CV joint.

That small stretch of road at Jn11a of the M5 following round to the A419 and up to the Red Baloon pub is one of my favorites. That up hill section is so fun !!

My rear end clonk remains and has been checked several times with no obvious cause. If it wasn't such a pain I would replace my rear bushes.

I assume you will be going with the Elephant Racing phosphor bronze bushes?

Not sure what I am going to do replacement wise, might machine up some delrin. Pretty sure its the bush, car doesn't feel right, there is some undamped movement in the rear. It almost felt like the height adjuster had failed, that was my first thought before pulling over. Need to get it jacked up and have a good look.

Another consideration could be the powerflex bushes, I've been considering those myself recently...[:D]

Tony could be a rear damper failure, like what happened to Ed's (edh) car?

Having turned the car round with no rear dampers on I dont think so, it was unbelievably bouncy. I do have ledas as well though so I did have a quick look, Were Ed's coilover units?

20 bonus points to Nick, had another look and the damper has broken the bottom loop off Just like Eds. It must have been resting on it when I looked under before. I guess with only one damper missing the ARB must keep it more under control, it was certainly a lot more bouncy with no rear shocks.

Ed am I right in thinking Gaz rebuilt yours with a quick turnaround?

They did - in around a week I think, just over £90 for both shocks (Might as well get both serviced & renew all the bushes)

- Unfortunately one started leaking 2 months later - they fixed it FOC and turned it round in 3 days! [:D]

Mine has broken the whole 'eye' off, rather than unravelling, will post some pics when its off.

Were they gaz shocks or did they rebuild the standard ones? I fancy some new ones as mine are tired but I'd rather pay £90 for rebuilt ones than buy new.

Mine were Leda single adjustables - I have no idea whether they will rebuild standard Boge or Konis, but might be worth calling them to ask. I didn't think new rear dampers were particularly expensive?

They're not super expensive, I was looking at around £110 each. I'd rather have both re-built for £90 though. Possibly they could alter the damping rate while they're at it.

Don't suppose you've still got the Ledas? [;)]

They are back on the car [:D] I have a set of tired standard dampers as well - very useful while I sent my others away for rebuilds

Blimey, not another one! Yours were some of the most recent ones too IIRC Tony. I can't help wondering if I'm on borrowed time with mine... I suspect it might be an idea to get mine rebuilt over the winter (and it'd probably be rude not to try a stiffer setup once again whilst it's all apart).
