Clonk

To add to the other issues with my car I have now noticed a clonk when you drive over any ridges, even slight ones, on the road. Its coming from the backend and happens when the wheel goes over the raised road surface.

Any ideas?

Hi Mojo
Crikey, you're not having much joy of late eh? I would suspect a worn suspension bush - I have an inkling that this was an issue with some cars (including my old 986S). Might be worth having a look at that.
Hope this is of help.

Mojo,

I'm currently getting this very problem sorted on my '99 986. It was diagnosed as a rear (off-side for me) radius arm front bush. I thought it was either the strut or drop links but investigation proved otherwise.

Get it checked to confirm but you can get the part from Eurocarparts if you dont want to go through an OPC. Unfortunately you can't just replace the bush, its a complete new arm (£168.95+VAT).

Hope this helps.

Iain

cheers,

Iain

The fact this clonk only appeared after Reading had the engine and gearbox out suggest they've probably missed an exhuast hanger or similar off, allowing movement in the exhaust and hitting something else.

Another item for them to sort out next week then [;)]

Hi Mojo
Mine was fixed under warranty, but it was a case of me mentioning it and it 'mysteriously' being absent after a service. It was within factory warranty at the time, but dependent on the age of the car may be regarded as 'wear and tear'. Check the smallprint before you claim - if it has full OPC history you might find there may be some 'goodwill' involved from Porsche GB.
Good luck![&:]

Black80XSA - Ah ha!! So I see the spec of your new car then!!

I think the noise is getting worse. After following 2 JCBs in to work today and travelling between 20-30mph its really noticeable.

Rob - thanks for this. Given it didn't do it before they took the gearbox etc out they can fix it FOC!!

Doesnt sound like its coming from the exhaust area more the wheel area and although the same noise its independant to each side.

Hi Mojo
Yep, that independent 'clonk' sounds very familiar, only mine was the front offside on my 986S. It was almost as though the wheel was about to come off (in more ways than one!), and was especially noticeable when I crept over some sleeping policemen (I crept over because I didn't want to wake them - groan!). It does sound very similar. Good luck with them sorting it out FOC!!
