Clonking steering - any ideas?

Hi all,

I've had a 'clonking' noise from my steering for a while now. It's steadily got worse over the months. Fitted a new recon power steering rack today, and although the steering feels nice and chrisp the clonk noise is still there [].

It happens when I corner hard or when I hit a bump mid corner. I've been told it might be one or both of the steering column UJ's. Does anybody know how difficult these are to replace or any other ideas about what this annoying noise is.

Sure its not something suspension related like the ARBs moving? The steering U/J shaft isn't that hard to replace, I think you need to drop a bit of the rack to get it off the pinch bolts.

checked, double checked, and triple checked the suspension - so I knowe that's OK.

Are the UJ's available as a service part or do I have to find a good used one?

Funnily enough I bought one last year thinking I needed it doing, but its not as badly worn as I thought + I can't be bothered [:D]

I'm pretty sure you can get it from Porsche themselves or a someone like Frazerpart. I got mine from Promax with a bunch of other stuff.

The steering shaft with the UJs are available new from your OPC. They're about £60 IIRC.

Have you checked the bushes on your steering rack? IIRC, Powersteering fluid is known to leak on them, which causes them to expand and not do their job properly.
