Clunking at rear

My car seems to be making an intermittent 'clunking' sound. Seems to be coming from the rear. I've had the car up in the air and checked all-round for any obvious play at the wheels - all seems fine.

I've subsequently driven about 150 miles today and there is definitely a hefty sounding 'clunk' form the rear of the car. It appears to be inconsistent; drive over some pock-marked road and it may not make a sound. Car drives fine - nothing untoward can be felt.

Given my trip to Le Mans is looming I'm intending to go investigating tomorrow.

I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string question' but I'd appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to what to look at.

Sounds like a drive shaft coupling. You may notice it more when going around a bend.

Greetings
I had a simla' problem, only going round bends tho' [:-] Turned out to be a sh*gged rear wheel bearing, which also took out the wheel hub itself, (only £445+vat from Porsche[]) a real snip.
I did ask Mummy for more money:rolleyes:
Ouch!
Good luck
Alex

Chris,
I also had this strange noise and it turned out that I had managed to break one of the rear anti-rollbar mounting brackets. Quite common apparently. Took me ages to spot it though as when the car is on level ground the break was not obvious to see.Not expensive to have done and only takes a matter of minutes to cut the old one off and weld the new one in place.

Rgds, Kevin

And the prize goes to........

About to remove the bar, drop links etc. Tomorrow I shal be making some phonecalls to see who can remove it and weld on a new one. Hope I can get it done in time!!!

You'll have to remove the gaiters, they can dry out and then wear quickly, a drive shaft joint failure produces quite a loud substantial clunk- clunk - clunk.

The ARB is now off the car - just have to be careful driving to wherever I take it for the bracket replacement.

The brackets seem to be about £40 ea, but how much should the work cost. Whilst I can't see anything worng with the passenger side bracket it makes sense (to me) to get them both replaced with the newer strengthened bracket.

Ouch! The car looks clean though so it should weld up nicely, about one hours labour for the welding. Make sure you put some protection back on there after the welding, maybe find somewhere that can do both jobs at the same time.

Hi Bones

Don't think I've got a problem with the driveshafts. The broken ARB mount looks like the cause of the clonking. Car only has just over 50k and in all other respects appears to drive well.

Now all repaired.

If I had had more time I would have gone with the WEVO cast mounts, but wanted to get the car sorted for Le Mans next week. So, updated OEM ARB mounts, new drop links, bolts, bushes and ARB & brackets poder coated.

The welding was done by Peter Chambers Automotive. I never new he had a workshop just a few miles from me until I saw a note in Porsche Post that he was opening a new workshop. Seems like a good outfit - I will definitely use them in the future.
