Clunking From Front End

Looking for a bit of feedback/ advice. My C4S MY03 40,000 miles has a clunk from front end from time to time[], particularly prevalent first thing but can occur at some stage throughout a drive. Have already changed Anti Roll Bar Bushes and drop links as these are reasonably cheap to do. Would be interested in any feedback from other owners if they have had similar and if so how it was resolved. OPC before Christmas indicated it could be the ball joints. Richard, have you any idea on cost if this is the case. [&o]

It sounds very simular to a noise I have from my C4S (2005 996) which started at around 20,000 miles.

The car has been in on a number of occassions for services and other things, but the car has never made the noise when it has been with the dealer (the car is fast approaching 50,000 miles).

It is due for a service next month, so I would love to know what you find out.

Hi Dillon, discussion on the subject with my OPC seems to indicate that it could be the ball joints but I'm not sure on any costs yet. I have had the whole front end checked for safety issues and there's no obvious play. Like you, when I take it down there the bl**dy things as quiet as a mouse[]

The ball joints on the wishbones tend to creak, rather than clonk. You have to change the whole wishbone, which are now £200+VAT each, but Hartech do an exchange service for them, and are quite a bit cheaper. (http://www.hartech.org/parts.html) Hartech call them a "track control arm". The forked control arm can cause a clonking sound, as can the strut top mounts.

Hi Richard

How does one get a 'forked control arm'?

a) My car has never had an accident?
b) How do you know so much. I have never seen that you have being unable to answer a question?

Remarkable.

Richard, thanks for the feedback, sorry for tardy response but I was flying this morning. The car's on Extended Warranty so it will need to be done at an OPC so not much change from £800 I would think.[&o] Dare I speculate that it will need a "geo" ? [:-] I have asked OPC for their thoughts.

Hi My C4 Cab has had the same issue. Only mine is only when I first start it up and put it on full lock to come out of my drive way. Mine is not only a noise but a knocking vibration.

Do you have the vibration too. If so I would be intersted to find out what your OPC says. I thought it would be the ball joint so would be interested in the cost. unfortunatelly my warranty has run out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi MJ, thanks for post, I'm not getting any vibration but I do need to have pretty much full lock on when coming out of the garage. Still waiting to hear from OPC Richard also thinks it should have a Geo, kerrrrching!!!! cheap at half the price !!!![8|]

What exactly do they cover in the warranty then? Seems odd to me that the 'bumper-to-bumper' warranty doesn't cover suspension components.

All 996's suffer from tyre skip on full lock - especially noticeable when reversing on damp and slippery surfaces. It is caused by a combination of the Ackerman steering geometry, and wide tyres. If you think about it, the outside of the tyre has to travel a greater distance than the inside of the tyre. Something has to give, and the tyre 'skips'. This does cause a vibration or juddering, which you can feel.

Hi Richard, thanks for the input, I do get the skipping on full lock at low speed. But I don't get vibration at higher speeds. Still waiting for OPC to get back to me. I'll let you know what they say.

?.....I always get a clunking or snapping sound and feeling when reversing out of my parking space at work. It is always in the same place. I put two and two together to assume it was the tyres pinching the ground as I go onto full lock whilst reversing and "snapping/pinching" producing the sound and feeling. So its likely I wasn't far off the mark for this one?
