clunking noise on full lock?

Hoping someone can help me.

My 944S2 makes a repeated clunking noise when the steering is on full lock. It's like you're driving over a small bump over and over again. This happens going both forwards and backwards and when the steering is to the right and the left (it's not fussy - although it only happens on full lock). I've checked the power steering fluid level and it's fine. Any advice gratefully received - thanks.

Mine's currently clonking very nicely, suspect a broken ARB part. It's mostly over bunps, but it does clonk in bends as well.

Paul,

Thanks. I'm taking it in for a service in a couple of weeks and will get them to check the ARBs. However, my clunk only happens on full lock on flat surfaces. Once driving along, suspension and steering is fine.

Regards,

Pete.

I think CV joints can still produce these problems even though they are on the rear wheels. I have never experienced it but I have heard others talk of it.

I have the same noise from mine on full lock, made me jump first time I heard it.My first thought was a bush.Post up if you find the cause.

I know exactly what you mean about driving over small bumps, mine did the same thing. A full geometry check and adjustment sorted it out.

Mine clunks but I know its the n/s outer bush on the front arb, gotta sort it when I get it back from the insurance company.......im starting to miss it.

Mine was clonking either side of centre, which was odd, and then I was sat in a traffic jam on Friday making it do it to try and figure out what it was I then realised that the allen bolts on my Momo steering wheel were loose!
Doh![]

I changed the rubbers on the front arb this weekend. £40 odd from Flo-flex for full set. Took about 1.5 hours very straightforward unbolting exercise. Best bang for the bucks I have ever done, car drives like its brand new.

Well I had a look under mine at the weekend, the O/S bush looks like its 3/4 popped out from the housing.Need to get a kit ordered. How difficult was it to get the new bush back on?

Not that difficult-lubrication is the key!

I put the hanger and bush in a vice and slowly wound it up, it slowly popped in with only a little help with a blunt bar to get the edges to go in. The two busheson the actual roll bar I sprayed the bar with silicone lubricant and used the old bushes one as a sort of drift to give it a help around the bend, again went on ok. Have to say this was a simple and very rewarding (in terms of the car improvment) hour and a halfs work, six bolts in all.

I promised to report back but nothing concrete to report I'm afraid. My 944S2 went in for its service last week. All front suspension checked out including bushes and no issues found as all looked OK. Only remaining thoery is that the front tyres are catching on the inner wing at full lock (it has non-standard 17inch 993 wheels and 205s) - but then no damage to inner wing found. It shall remain a mystery for now!

Regards,

Pete.
