Clutch Dead - possibly

Well here I go again, 2 weeks having owned this little baby(S2 Cab) and Im already spending potentially big money on it. Accelerating hard off a roundabout today up through the gears selected 3rd and all of a sudden nasty noise and no drive available through the gearbox. Hoping its the clutch and not the gearbox and hoping further that it maybe something cheaper still. ( All this just after a visit to the dentist !)

The car had been PPI 'd and this is the risk of a 20yr old car, that somethings are impossible to foresee. So for all of you considering buying a 944 you can do all the checks and history stuff but at the end of the day its down to luck and the acceptance that sh*t happens and can be very expensive but you wont regret owning one when you know its in A1 Mechanical condition.

And finally thanks to the guys in the GT3 (bright yellow) who buzzed me as I sat on the embankment and also to the 993 and 997 who gave me a honk and a wave just outside Wendover this afternoon. (Ignored by a couple of boxsters that went past).

[:(] Sorry to hear that Andy. It doesn't sound like a normal clutch failure to me, but I'm sure the guys at RPM will get it sorted. Hope it's not too expensive to put right [8|]

Thanks Peter, Its already with them AA recovered me straight there. Will hopefully have a diagnosis tomorrow.

How right you are Paul , But I do have the most beautiful dentist with a fantasticset of errr........................teeth ! [;)]

how you can be thinking of that when someone is drilling your teeth is beyond me lol [:D]

good luck with the car anyway[;)]

The clutch on my S2 went like this nearly 10 years ago. It was the rubber piece in the middle breaking up. Prior sysmptoms were very strong clutch judder when the car was warm and after being in stop/ start driving. Its a lot of labour, I would not expect much change from £1k if not more than that!

I'd rather go to the dentist and have a filling done without anaesthetic than face another breakdown and clutch fit (I was in Scotland and had it done at a main dealer) even in 1998 it cost £1100!

Well a new clutch it is for £942.
Im certainly pleased its not being done by a main dealer. If it cost £1100 in 98 I dread to think what they would want now.

Ouch! Oh well, at least you know it'll be good for another 100k+ miles.

is it definitly verified the clutch has gone ? It occurred to me that it might be a broken linkage ?

Yes pretty sure it is the clutch all drives and links are good.
So gearbox being dropped out tomorrow I think, back with me on Monday.
John mentioned a judder in the post earlier and I did feel that on Sunday when idling along in the traffic. And I was getting a slapping noise when changing up through the gears.
Will keep you posted if anything else crops up.

Clutch is fixed ! Big rubber donut disintegrated !
So picking it up in the morning.
As a result of this expense and many other factors including moving and lack of car park space I will be shortly putting my other S2 on the market which is mechanically A1. ( Will post a note on here )
Regards
Andy

Nice quick turnaround on the clutch Andy - where did you have it done?

Sorry to hear the other S2 has to go [:(]

Paul - Ollie at RPM did it for me as they have done all my work. They must think Im jinxed with the amount of money theyve had off me in the past 12months.
And well, the other S2 has been fun and a learning experience, one I should never have bought in the first place ,but who ever takes it off me will be getting a mechanically very sound car.I hope someone off the forum or an enthusiast takes it, would hate it to go to a chav infact I wouldnt sell it to a chav.
regards

I think these cars should come with a warning on the dash. This is such a common failure. Its not necessarily the age of the clutch (rubber perishing ) but rather too many aggresive off the line wheel spins .

These cars were designed and constructed as fast comfortable long distance cruisers not as street racers and the rubber bit is designed to make for a comfortable vibration free transmission not to soak up doughnuts and wheelspin starts.[8|]

Not that I am saying you did this Andy lol probably a past chav owner.

Sorry to hear you may have to part with your other S2 is there no other way ?

I recently re-financed an existing loan and increased it slightly. Paid off all my other loans debts finance etc .This done away with over £57 monthly repayments and the new repayments on my loan were £100 per month less !
A total monthly saving of £157.00 and gave me a bit of extra cash into the bargain [:D]

I'm feared to death that my clutch is about to go. Its working perfectly at the moment but was last changed over 80,000 miles ago. And its a turbo = ££££'s!

Ocean finance? [8D]

Peanut, you either were paying faaar to much interest in the first place, or you've extended the term of the new loan by a fair amount. (Or both)
