Clutch/Gearchange

I have a 1998 996 C2 with about 72,000 on the clock. I think that it may have had a new clutch at some point in its life but I am not completely sure.

The gearchange, particularly 1st to 2nd is distinctly notchy in normal driving. If I am lazy in changing and don't fully depress the clutch it can crunch the gears. I also think that the clutch feels fairly heavy.

Does this sound like the clutch needs doing, could it be gearbox problems or are they all like this? I have heard it said that the change in many 996's is only good under hard accelerating conditions.

Thanks for any help that you may be able to offer.

When I needed a new clutch the clutch peddle had become very stiff to depress whilst a new one is much lighter. This should be an easy test.

Thanks jmk.
Without a comparison car I am not sure whether the clutch is heavy or not. I think that I will take it into the specialist I use and ask their opinion.

My old clutch really was heavy and needed considerable effort to depress all the way. Also the biting point was right at the end of the travel. My new clutch is as light as most other cars, well maybe not a Nissan Micra.

So if it's a considerable effort to press, I'd guess it's new clutch time. Out of interest, mine didn't slip at all even though it was pretty much at the end of its life.
