Clutch Gone

John Maddox

New member
Bad day today - 993 had to be relayed to OPC Bournmouth. Went on Shopping trip to Chichester and without any warning the clutch went when manouvering into parking space. Car 1 day out of warranty following purchase six months ago. Will contact specialist I purchased from to see if anything can be done on Monday.
Anyone had clutch replaced by OPC and know the likely cost ? Suppose I may have to sell the house now !!

Sounds like bad news! To be honest and I am prepared to be corrected on this, it sounds like more of a failure other than the clutch-plate itself. You would probably have noticed a clutch slipping had it just been the clutch plate, so your problem may well lie elsewhere on the assembly. If this is the case, you might be lucky and get a retrospective warranty claim if the company is feeling generous, although cluches and warranty are, in my opinion, a bit of an iffy area and generally the clutch isn't covered, whereas a pressure plate or thrust release bearing could well be.

Looking at the worst case scenario though, if you are to shell out for the work I'd be very tempted to look for a reputable indie' specialist and save a boat load on the labour charge. Post up how you go on.

Regards

John, I agree with Oliver - there's more to this than just/only the clutch, I think. The clutch on my 993 C4S was patently slipping, especially full-on up steep hills. Reading AFN OPC charged me about £1,750 incl. VAT (and 'free' courtesy car), but the clutch itself only cost about £550 excl. VAT - the rest was labour charges. Being a 4WD the work was quite complex. They offered me a discount on the work - I believe they were genuine when they said they thought life was being a bit unjust to me. I don't believe I was ripped-off, although 1750 quid is a lot to have to fork out - but not quite a house's worth..

Bummer about the warranty - I'd have thought they'd have stretched a point - it was only 1 day out. They could surely have come to some sort of split charge arrangement with you. The good press they'd probably receive would soon pay-back their 'investment'.

Maybe you'll be lucky and it'll only be something minor.

Good luck
Matthew

Thanks Guys for your support and info. OPC said they would ring Monday once they had looked at it properly. I'll post more then.

If you insist on using opc then thats (1700) the sort of money a new one will cost,if you use an recomended indie it will cost between 750-1200 fitted.Worth considering although probably a bit late now.

Maurice - I was reversing into parking space and was to pull forward to straighten and when I took it out of reverse the clutch pedal went slack as if it had lost hydraulic pressure and I could not engage gears. Some fumes then came from the engine bay and I quickly switched off and decided not to start it again. The smoke/fumes came from the air intake at the right of the engine and smelt very strong and acrid - a bit like frying electrics. I drive carefully and never slip the clutch and there was no warning of this happening at all , the clutch being absolutely fine until this failure.
When delivered to the OPC the technician rolled it off the flat bed and decided to start it. The engine started straight away and after pumping the clutch pedal for some time he had enough clutch action to move it to their locked and gated area so it was safe over the weekend. He was not concerned when I mentioned the fumes.
His initial reaction was the clutch linings and hydaulics were shot but not necessarily the flywheel and they would investigate further on Monday and let me know.
What do you think, Maurice ?

John , dam bad news , hopefully its not as bad as you think ( fingers crossed )
My car has recently had a new clutch and then within a couple of weeks has needed a new slave cylinder as well. Hopefully that will rectify my problems , just waiting to get my car back ( 2 weeks in garage [:(] )

I had the clutch replaced on my 96 993 C4 at OPC and the cost was...........................£2900

But it was a fantastic job and the car felt like a brand new.

Thanks

OPC report it's just the clutch. The flywheel is ok although a small oil leak at the crank seal is also present but not a cause. They offered to pull the flywheel and replace the seal (£20) while they are in there to which I readily agreed.

Looks like £1200-£1500 less our discount. They expect to finish on Wednesday so I am very pleased with how quickly they will have dealt with this.

Further once I have her back !!

Chrisr - hope you get yours back soon and it's fully back to health.

Abohan - thats a big bill but glad you were pleased with the repair.

Cheers John , glad to hear that your car will be ready soon and that its not as bad as it could have been , just heard today that mine will also be ready for Wed , forgotten what the car looks like [:D]

Hi John
Just catching the back end of your clutch problem, this info maybe of help. The big cost is the labour and a good third party porsche dealer will be half the price of your OPC. I don't know how many miles your car has done but if it is the clutch you may need a flywheel as well. Very unlikely your OPC will include this in the estimate and they will probably let you know when the engine is out and you are in no position to say 'thats ok I'll leave for another time'.
From personal experience I can recommend Ninemeister, a bit of a trek up north but worth the journey. They do a lightweight RS flywheel and clutch assembly for the price of an OPC clutch.
I hope things work out ok for you.
Regards
Peter
