Clutch info please!

The infamous clutch! So I've read and have been told many times that the 993 clutch is guaranteed to go and need replacing at around 60k miles.

As someone looking to buy a 993 the question that I have is.... Does the clutch just go/fail immediately or does it take sometime to become unusable?

Reason I ask is that I am thinking of buying a 993 that has done over 65k but not had the clutch done. The clutch feels okay but I'm on a budget so wondering how long I can avoid a big bill?

Cheers,

Al

I just had my clutch changed at 81000 miles. The pedal was a bit stiff and gearchanging was a bit notchy as the pedal had to go right into the carpet. There was no slip and Camtune reckon that it would probably have done another 5000 miles before doing so. I changed it because of the perceptible change in the gear shift and this has largely gone back to where it was before but I think there may also be a gear change issue to be resolved.

The upside is that the car is noticeably quieter and reversing now occurs without a horrible burning smell.

You may well get 80/85000 miles out of the clutch and it depends mainly, I think, on how you use it and how it has been used before.

It shouldn't just go - in my experience it would start slip more and more and at the same time the pedal would get slightly stiffer.

Should start to slip first........gear change much smoother after being changed....mine made it to 79K....and then was only changed as the rear seal needed doing doing so had the clutch done why they in there.....

Thanks guys! You've provided the answer I was looking for..... "When the clutch starts to go the car isn't immediatly off the road!!"

Hi Marice.... Yes, I plan to get a Peter Morgan inspection before buying! I need the peace of mind that I haven't bought a real lemon!

Off to see the car again now..... Will let you all know how I get on!!
