Clutch issues?

I had my clutch replaced (by Camtune) at 81000 miles, a few weeks ago. Although there was no slip, gear changes had become more difficult over the last few months, and the clutch was getting quite smelly while reversing. The clutch pedal was heavy but no different from the past 10000 miles, and nowhere near a 964C4.

Now, I still have the same heavy, but smoother, clutch and gear changing is not improved. I would have expected a much lighter pedal at least - as a colleague remarked the other day, having had his clutch done it was now the lightest of any car he had ever owned. And the gear changing is hacking me off - clunky 2/3, 3/4, 6/5, 5/4, 4/3 and the usual very slow 1/2.

Any thoughts? I am going to take it up with Camtune anyway but some comments would be helpful.

Thanks

Richard

Mine done last year and still smooth and light.

Did Camtune replace the release bearing - usually part of the kit.

Regarding gearchange - sounds as if the clutch is dragging imho

If they didn't, they ought to be shot[:'(]. Clutch should definitely be light and positive - how about the master/slave cylinders - maybe there's something amiss there?[;)]

Thanks guys

The gearbox oil was changed last August so should be OK. I really don't know what they did change as the invoice is so vague but I will take it up with them tomorrow.

When my clutch was changed the "clutch fork shaft kit" was also changed. Thrush bearing was inspected and found to be in good condition.

Clutch pedal before:
I found it quite stiff and tiring to use in stop-start traffic (although a couple of mechanics I asked about it said "no worse than other 993s") with biting point high. Jumpy to control at low speed (eg reversing out of drive)

Clutch pedal after change:
Much lighter (although still feels like a real car, unlike the hair-dryer that is also parked on drive). Biting point much closer to floor, making it easier to control. First 100 miles or so of new clutch was still a bit jumpy, but now really smooth changes.

Gearbox felt same before and after (no difficulty getting into gear etc)

I had clutch changed because it started to slip (saw rev counter leap up to 4-5K a few times when car speed = 2K). Clutch was completely worn down to metal studs (indy showed me the worn unit).

Only did 30K miles on it's first clutch! - but indy claims lack of use makes them stiff, which wears the fork shaft, which means they don't engage as firmly as they should, which means they slip and wear out. Don't know enough about how it all fits together to know if this can be right. (Even with the indy drawing me diagrams to try to explain!)

My clutch pedal was just as you describe yours before the change and, frankly, it isn't a lot different now. The take up in stop/start conditions is better but not great.

Does your clutch smell when you reverse up a ramp like I do onto my drive? I think I am very sympathetic to the clutch but it always pongs whenever I back up onto the drive and then roll into the garage.

Richard.

Got the 993 out the garage today, first time in a while, and the clutch is very light and smooth. Effortless is how I would describe and it's done 37K on the clutch so not even new. Much much lighter than the 964 (which admittedly is coming up to 90K). Also it has never smelt (nor has the 964). Gearbox is not clunky as you describe.

All in all yours does not sound right to me.

I believe 993s can suffer from rust on the shaft on which the clutch slides. This can make the clutch stiff and/or cause it to drag but you'd have expected this to have been cleaned up as part of the fitting.

Richard,
Old clutch was smelling in last week or so before I noticed it slipping - did not realize it was clutch at the time. I still do sometimes get a smell now - but it could just be exhaust fumes blowing in window as I reverse.

I suspect your "fork shaft" is worn and should have been changed, and therefore the new clutch is not fully engaged and is slipping.[] Very annoying as it's a fairly cheap part.
