Hi
Just about finished doing the clutch on my '83 944, old clutch was destroyed!
If you're planning on doing this yourself, here's a few hints, words of wisdom etc etc
Don't do it on your own, it's a big job and hard work, takes a long time, an extra pair of hands makes it sooooo much easier, especially when manouvering the gearbox and trying to get at some of the pain in the arse bolts around the bell housing.
Get the car as high as possible on 4 heavy duty axle stands
You may / will need oxy/acet - heat to get the bolts out of the exhaust
Use good quality tools, we used a BIG box of Snap on and it made it so much easier, short ratchets, long 19mm spanners, long ratchet extensions are all needed.
The bell housing is difficult to remove due to a heater pipe above it.
The sensors on top of the bell housing might make you swear a lot! as will the earth strap next to it!!
Use a slide hammer for the clutch lever pin
Took about 10/11 hours but I was working with a good mechanic (who recalls doing one of these in '84!) and had all the right, good tools.
Ran the car last thing last night and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor, it was still on stands and I was able to get gears with the engine running, just need to sort the pedel out later today
A few pics of what a clutch shouldn't look like, this made a mess of the flywheel too
