Clutch Job

Hi

Just about finished doing the clutch on my '83 944, old clutch was destroyed!

If you're planning on doing this yourself, here's a few hints, words of wisdom etc etc

Don't do it on your own, it's a big job and hard work, takes a long time, an extra pair of hands makes it sooooo much easier, especially when manouvering the gearbox and trying to get at some of the pain in the arse bolts around the bell housing.

Get the car as high as possible on 4 heavy duty axle stands

You may / will need oxy/acet - heat to get the bolts out of the exhaust

Use good quality tools, we used a BIG box of Snap on and it made it so much easier, short ratchets, long 19mm spanners, long ratchet extensions are all needed.

The bell housing is difficult to remove due to a heater pipe above it.

The sensors on top of the bell housing might make you swear a lot! as will the earth strap next to it!!

Use a slide hammer for the clutch lever pin

Took about 10/11 hours but I was working with a good mechanic (who recalls doing one of these in '84!) and had all the right, good tools.

Ran the car last thing last night and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor, it was still on stands and I was able to get gears with the engine running, just need to sort the pedel out later today

A few pics of what a clutch shouldn't look like, this made a mess of the flywheel too

Cheers for that Tony, did that clutch work at all before you changed it because it sure looks a mess []

10-11 hours is not bad going for a car on jackstands. Some places quote 12 hours labour and they will have access to a lift and all sorts of tools.

No it was totally gone, you couldn't select a gear with the engine running. I bought the car knowing the clutch wasn't working. The clutch was that bad it had screwed the flywheel so fitted a good condition, second hand FW from Porsche-apart in Ramsbottom, those guys are really helpful and have a good stock of used and new parts.

Took the car for a quick spin last night and finished the day off with a very big smile on my face!

If anyone else is thinking of taking this job on, please feel free to ask questions!

Tony
