Clutch judder

Had some clutch judder in the queue at Silverstone the other week, but it was fine on the drive home.

A hot clutch, maybe, or do you think this is the beginning of the break up of the rubber centre? BTW we're still on the original clutch at 120k!!
 
When mine started to go, one symptom was that it would exhibit judder when I was in heavy, stop-start traffic. This gradually got worse even though it felt "fine" under "normal" driving conditions.

Another symptom was transmission shunt when cruising on a very light throttle at @2,000 rpm in 4th gear.

 
The original rubber-centered clutch disc on my S2 juddered quite a bit in stop-start traffic and although the rubber was fine when I replaced it, the friction material was worn out nearly down to the rivets, although it worked fine anywhere else than in traffic. A good sign of an S/S2 clutch going south is how it starts to judder when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear without blipping the throttle.

 
Thanks both. Sounds like it's not that bad yet, as we don't have either shunting on a light throttle or judder on downshifts. This concurs with my conversation with Northway...their advice (always sensible) was to wait and see if it gets worse. Took it out last weekend and it's just fine in normal driving.

Let's hope it can survive my day at the Prescott Hill Climb School.....

 
I noticed judder on mine on the last trip to the paint shop (Mexican standoff and the cars is still there) euro car parts has a good deal on turbo clutches so I purchased one with a view to fitting it over the winter.

Good advice to wait and see. To cheer you up my S2 juddered when I bought it 12 years ago. Still no worse nor any other problems with the clutch to date but I do avoid traffic jams whenever possible.
