Clutch maintenance.

My never ending clutch saga I hope is nearing its end, more due to the fact the the Plate, Slave and Master cylinder have now all been replaced and there is little else shiney to add.

The last problem I have, and it has been developing for the last while, is the clutch return, which, when the beast is hot can be heart stoppingly slow or not at all. This leads to some interesting take off at traffic lights with it reaching a peak yesterday when it stayed to the floor needing me to use my right foot to prize it off the carpet.

Anyone have an idea of how the release arm is lubbed? I am not sure that spraying WD40 any where near the clutch plate is a hugely great idea and I can't find any details on how this is undertaken. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Mike

hey Mikie did you ever get this fixed ? lets us know how its going .
Did you do the work yourself or did you put it into a garage ? I guess you must have done it diy or you would have returned it to the garage.

Not yet. An interesting development is, that if you depress the clutch with the engine off, it returns fine. If the engine is on, its becomes arthritic. I am begining to wonder what may have been done to it when they replaced the plate. Hmmmmm. ££££££ to whip the lot off again. [:(]

ah that should be a significant clue .worth checking your vacumm hoses and non return valve etc from the servo

I'd be inclined to check the obvious stuff first one more time ie check the return spring on the clutch pedal has been fitted correctly. Check the spring length extended and free length.
Check the slave return spring also. You could add an extra spring to both by experiment.

It could be the clutch plate may be sticking on the spline but it also could be a sticking clutch arm pivot or one of the cylinders.
If you disconnect the slave you could try the clutch arm and plate and check they return freely .

Another simple thing to do is bleed the system out again. I've only had this happen once on an old MGB and I seem to remember it was due to the new cylinder sticking in the master cylinder . I think I stripped it out just made sure it was really well lubed with brake fluid and reassembled it, checked by hand that it was returning ok then refitted it bled system and it was ok
Sorry thats probably not very helpful really
