clutch master cylinder

Hi,

I was on the way to the MOT the other day and I found the clutch pedal had gone all the way to the floor and wouldnt come back up until I put my foot under it and levered it back. But then I couldnt get it in first until I warmed the engine up a bit and even then it was still a bit of a struggle. I got it to the garage eventually . Threy have told me I need a new clutch master cylinder and flexipipe. I have tried porsche apart but got no reply. Can anyone recommend where I can get one from? How muuch do they cost?

Thanks,

Oliver

Oliver Welcome to world of a failing Clutch master cylinder - it happens to us all eventually ! Having done this job on my car recently a couple of points: 1. You should be able to get said cylinder from Burt at Berlyn Services http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/ or +44 (0)1271 866818 2. IMHO, if you going to the trouble of changing this, for the sake of an additional ~ £80 I would also fit a new slave cylinder to the car. 3. Your man at the MOT station is probably very wise to advise changing the flexible hose - they perish over the years especially with the heat from the exhaust. 4. If you get stuck with the job, PM or ring me (07540 193874) ? Last but not least I have a brand new goodridge braided flexible hose if you're interested ? I ordered and because of a mix up end up fitting a new Porsche part, so it's going spare. Yours Chris

Hi Oliver, Check out the suppliers in the faqs, plenty of them will do a clutch cylinder. I agree with Chris that doing both master and slave, and the pipe, is good sense unless one has been changed recently. It's usually the slave, rather than the master, that fails first. Is there any obvious leaking or wetness around the clutch pedal?

Chris, If Oli doesn't want the flexi pipe I probably will. Could you let me (us) know a price please. Thanks David

Has anyone actually fitted the goodridge flexi yet ? I only ask as I ordered one and tried to fit at the weekend (master and slave appear OK at the mo but the flexi is definitely beyond function) and am having an issue with the M14 female adapter onto the end of the hard line. The hard line and adapter mate up OK but there is then not enough overlap of the female M14 onto the bundy nut on the pip - half a thread and the pipe bottoms out on the male inside the fitting. Have called goodridge and they are stumped as to what the problem is ? They say it's the only adapter they do, and my car is untouched in this area (as I can attest having lost knuckle skin on Saturday undoing the bundy nut which was tighthened in '88 lol). Any thoughts ?

The guy at the garage said that the fluid had leaked all over the pedal and the carpet (I havent driven it for a while), and the slave cylinder was ok but the master one needs replacing. I've had a bit of a nightmare getting the car back from the garage. They didnt want me to leave it there whilst I sourced a spare part for it and so I had to put it in third and then fire it up and drive home (after they had topped it up with clutch fluid and gave me a push out of the car park). There are a few junctions and hill starts on the way home (through south west London) and I just about got it back but there is now a terrible burning smell which I think might be the clutch. I cant see how I am going to get it back to the garage again now. I think I might have to sell it as it is, which is a real shame as its a lovely motor when its running. Is anyone looking for a project? Cheers, Oliver

I'll try to answer two questions at once: David - looking for £30 inc postage for the Goodridge hose - this will fit as I've also has the same problem as Mike in terms of fitment. The original hose I was sent from CAM via e-bay was a goodridge standard part hose. After lengthy discussions with CAM developments in St Albans I sent them the old Rubber hose to use as a template and then they sent me a replacement correct hose. In between this happening I purchased a rubber OPC part from Porsche as needed the car reliable to go to the Ring, hence why I've no got the spare one. Chris

Hi all. Posted couple of weeks ago with the same problem (pedal to the floor). Hadn't driven it for about 6 months. I have purchased a slave cylinder repair kit from Porsche Leicester (£16) and tonite took off the starter motor (Swine) and have no signs of any fluid leak. There doesn't appear to be any dluid round any of the pipes and I can't see fluid in the footwell/pedal. There is'nt any fluid in the reservoir! I asked the price of a master cylinder repair kit and Porsche didn't do one but the complete master from OP was £118. Not too bad. How easy is the master cylinder removal? Is it just the 2 bolts on the bulkhead and pull it out? Thanks

You won't see any obvious leak from the slave, as any fluid gets blasted away by all the moving parts. That's why the simplistic diagnosis is "wet floor, master, no leak slave". If you're happy to DIY rebuid the slave or master, then Mercedes repair kits are cheaper. TBH if the Porsche kit is only £16 then I'd not bother!

Ref. removing the Master cylinder, yes two x 10mm bolts holding onto the bulk head. Don't forget that the shank of the cylinder is on rod on the clutch pedal = need to remove the circlip holding it on, which is not an easy job upside down in drivers footwell.....

New slave and its sorted. Of course trying to remove the old one to fix with the repair kit as would be expected the bleed nipple sheared. Thanks to all.
