Clutch pedal not returning

Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something here, advising a 944 owner.

His clutch pedal intermittently won't return. I suggested master, slave or pipe between. His garage have told him there are no leaks, but the fluid was low so they've topped it up and bled it. It's still not returning properly, a week later the fluid is still there although it's only done a few miles. No obvious problem with the pedal itself.

Would I be right in thinking that the fluid won't be lost, to any degree, if not used? I assume it's only likely to be leaking when under pressure as you use the clutch? Or, could the piston in one of the cylinders be sticking, regardless of the fluid level?
 
I'd agree with you Paul, I'd still say slave. Mine doesn't lose much fluid at all (even over a decent period of time) but the pedal still drops.........I'll sort it once it comes out of hibernation now, as it's not gonna see the light of day for a while.

You would assume correctly Paul. My slave started going with no obvious signs of leaks or fluid loss. I think instead of leaking the fluid passes by the seals inside and doesn't really do much. I would definitely suspect one or tother of master and slave cylinders.
 
Sad thing when I, as a complete novice with all things mechanical, seem to be able to diagnose it better than a local "prestige car garage with years of working on Porsches", the place he went to after bad experiences of a very well-respected indie. [:eek:]

Come on indies, are you getting hacked off with 944s? I know that it's going to be an uphill struggle to justify the costs on some cars, but most of us are willing to pay as long as we get good service. Or, are you all after the Boxsters and 996s? [8|]
 
I'd also go with the slave. That's what happened to mine.

Inside the slave the cylinder walls had gone rusty so when I tried to bleed it the piston went into the rusty part and got stuck, no loss of fluid but I also couldn't bleed it whilst it was like this.

Took it apart and cleaned it out so it was free again and refitted it (don't worry I have a new one now) but was still unable to bleed it and the pedal still stuck. I ended up giving the plastic pipe that enters the slave a wiggle and it all came back to life so I think there was a slight blockage in there also.
 
Another vote for the slave. Mine had lost fluid but when topped up and watched didn't seem to drop. But the pedal wouldn't come back up on its own.
I managed to change mine and bleed it and I'm no mechanical god. £80 plus a bottle of fluid and a few hours. I could do it faster the second time!
 
I had a similar problem on mine the pedal was slow to come up. My car had been stood for a year I sprayed oil on the pedal where the pedal meets the shaft (poor explanation) where the pedal pivots and it freed up nicely.

Nope, we have a car park full of 944 and 968 - more than happy to work on them !
