Clutch PROBLEMS.????

Big Dave

New member
Now then folks..

Hope some of you chaps can shed some light on my problem.????

Ive just had the S2 in the garage for some fairly major "surjury"

IE a new COMPLETE clutch assembly [ SPEC 1 from Lindsey racing US.]
Incl all new bearings , throw out , clutch fork etc, etc, etc,,,
BUT
no new flywheel !!!!!!! "Now starting to regret not doing this.."

Also a gearbox re-build , new pinions + new 4 point bearing .
New gearbox mount , + 944 racing Short shift kit fitted at the same time..

My problem IS
HUGE amounts + i mean HUGE amounts of clutch judder.....
In fact so much so that the car is almost undrivable for "town use ", stop, start stuff...
Would you folks say that its down to the flywheel being "out of tru" ie needing skimming or even a new one fitting.?????

Also the gearbox now sounds worse than when it first went in to have the bearings done.????

I have been told that the "stiffer" springs in the clutch makes the transmision noise louder....as ive now removed the rubber dampening bit......

Could it be that the gear cogs have worn + that there is now more "slap" in the box.?????

Have any of you folks fitted or heard any reports of a SPEC clutch kits ..????

Yours hoping for a solution......+ not too costly.???????

I'll tell you in a few weeks as I have a Spec stage 3 6 puck going in mine.

To be honest I expect it to be pretty nasty around town. I did buy a brand new flywheel though.

Is that a paddle clutch? If so you`ll kill it off in no time in traffic or is it something special?

Yes it is. The car is stripped out, not exactly for going down to Tescos in so I'm not worried about its in-traffic drive.

Understood but a couple of westfield series boyos put paddle clutches in theirs and a few stop/starts in a queue stuffed theirs completely. One caterham owner has to pull over and let traffic clear. Great for track but there aint a lot of contact pad area so they heat up real quick unless you dump the clutch (which is what they are designed for) which you cant in traffic of any kind

Not intended as criticism, just my two penny worth/experience

From the link to the manufacturer's site Andrew posted above:

Stage Three
High-clamp pressure plate, 3-piece disc with carbon or ceramic material, bearings and a tool.
ULTIMATE STREET/STRIP CLUTCH!
Sharp but smooth engagement with light pedal.

I'm not expecting it to be as good as the description suggests and I won't be at all surprised if I have to wait for a few car lengths clear in front of me and dump it. There are however paddle clutches and paddle clutches and for all the horror stories I have heard there are an equal number of people who tell me they have driven cars with paddle clutches that have been proper pussycats. I suspect the actual puck design has a lot less to do with the drive than the friction material.

Of all the mods I have told people I am making there are two that loads of people seem to find contentious; the paddle clutch and the unassisted steering. I guess I'll be able to tell everyone what is what in terms of those mods on the 944 pretty soon.
