Clutch Question

Two things spring to mind - slave cylinder, but most likely could be the clutch system is not bled properly. They are notoriously difficult to bleed properly and various specialists have fashioned their own weird and wonderful methods to achieve this.

Yeah had crossed my mind Scott but the master cylinder has been in about 2 months now and have only just noticed this in the last week or so. Know what you mean about bleeding. Not exactly much room to swing the 7mm spanner under there. Failry sure it was done ok though. Did it with a pressure bleedeer. Are the slave cylinders known for breaking down under heat??? I don't know?? Perhaps the seals maybe expanding and leaking by. Haven't noticed any loss in clutch fluid though. Will have another check in daylight tomorrow.

Well if the master cylinder was knackered and needed replacing then the slave cylinder can't be too far behind it - these things don't last forever. The thing with bleeding is that there are air traps in the system and even a pressure bleeder isn't a fool-proof way of ensuring the system is bled. Once specialist I used says they jack the front of the car up to a specific angle to encourage the trapped air out. Anyway, just a thought - it is not uncommon.

I was just on my way home to Peterborough from Boston and the traffic on the A16 was fairly sparse for once. Naturally I decided to stretch the old turbo's legs and give her some proper beans!!! Trouble is as I was giving her a good spanking and clogging down to overtake other cars I noticed a marked increase in clutch pedal stroke before the pedal became firm. This is not the first time I have noticed this but just put it down to me imagining it before lol. The clutch operates OK and gear changing is fine. After the car has been left standing all returnds to normal. I have recently changed the master cylinder so happy with that. I am formulating theories along the lines of clutch wear and heat. Anyone else ever experienced this or got any ideas?

Hi Rob I agree with Scott check the slave cylinder as after replacing the master cylinder the next weak spot will be the slave cylinder and after that the clutch hose pipe from the reservoir will be the next to go. Pete
