Clutch release bearing

I'm getting a slight noise from the clutch. When the car is hot and the car is in neutral I get a noise that sounds like the release bearing. I take it that replacing the fluid in the clutch would help or do I have to remove the release bearing and replace it. Or is there any adjustment available down there. I checked the clutch when I put the engine back in and it was in really good nick so I would presume that its just the bearing that's noisy.

Any ideas ?

If the clutch pedal is released (up) and the box in neutral, the whole of the drive shaft inside the torque tube is running in its bearings, and these are often (I might even say usually) at least a bit noisy, so it might not be the release bearing? I'm sure someone else will be along with more of an idea as to how to tell the difference and what to do about it.
 
I am going to pop the gearbox out over the winter and do all the bearings in there as well as in the torque tube. But this noise sounds like a dragy clutch or release bearing to me, it only really happens when the car is really hot.

Try pulling the gearstick hard right and see if the noise diminishes/goes away. I suspected my TT for a while but it seems its my 5th gear idler or summit like that. Noise has got no worse after 3 years and actually disappears comepletely after sprited driving (oil will be well splattered about in box at this point). Can only be heard at idle when warm and not been driving very quick.

New g/box oil helped a bit but did not remove noise completely. Molyslip will help but not if you have an LSD. Dare say that swepco stuff would do a trick also.

Apparently quite common if its the idler and not a concern.

Just replaced my near new clutch due to release bearing issues. It was noisy as u describe - depress the clutch and the noise would abate. Then started binding on the guide tube and causing drag when shifting, etc. The shop that did the work showed me the old parts. Clutch disc near new (measured 20 mm against new of 18mm with 34mm wear limit), pressure plate looked good. Release bearing was full of hard grease (assume it was white grease initially that solidified over time) but felt fine when turned by hand.

Replaced clutch/pp/tob AND guide tube - works great!

So - always change your TOB and the tube - not expensive compared to the work required to get at them.

Re adjustment - not really much adjustment and being hydraulic - so long as your cylinders are in good shape there is not much reason for the clearances to be out of whack. Shop manual shows clearances on slave cyl to actuator arm and how to adjust the pedal helper spring.
 
I'll leave it till the winter then. Although I'll try the 5th gear thing Stuart. When we were in france my mate found it hard to go into 5th occasionally although I didn't notice anything wrong.
 
I don't have any issues with 5th or selecting 5th. It just seems to have a slightly noisy idler, only evident once heated up like I said once the oil has thinned a wee bit. Also seems to disappear completely after a few trips to the rev limiter...........of course on my private race track! [:D]
