Clutch replacement/Lightened flywheel

My 993 Targa has done 130K and I haven't got sufficient service history with the car to know when the clutch was last replaced (if at all). Whilst the clutch isn't slipping, the initial bite point is about half way up the pedal travel and sometimes there is slight judder on initial take up from rest. If I stab the throttle in a high gear at relatively low revs there is a thud but no slack in the drive line.

I am assuming (probably incorrectly) that the clutch is worn and the dual mass flywheel is not in the best state.

If I am going to change the DMF, my question is should I replace it with the same again, or should I fit a lightened flywheel suitable for "road and track".

I do not use the car for track days and normally drive within the legal limits (at least, when my wife is with me), but I am concerned that fitting a lightened flywheel may take away the smooth running that I currently have.

Does anyone have any experience regarding lightened flywheel versus DMF?

Pat, not changed my DMF because was in good condition when I changed my clutch (although that was 50K miles ago now!) but have a read of this thread, sounds like people who change like it:

This is the same sort of issue as the "what type of suspension should I go for?" question isn't it? Like sports suspension, both will be better when you're pushing on but not so good when conditions stop them doing what they do best - our potholed roads for suspension and town driving for the flywheel.
I don't see the point in having to put up with the bad aspect if you're not going to make full use of the attributes. I would suggest that if you drive it like you stole it go for the lightened flywheel, if you're more of a gt cruiser stick with the dmf.

I use a single mass flywheel on my 968 race car. Perfect for the track, not so good for the road. I'd make sure that you know what you're trying to achieve before you go that route.

Thanks to all of you for your various suggestions. In view of my type of driving I think I will take the safe option and stick with standard. Better the devil you know etc.

Thanks again for your input.
