Clutch whine noise

I'm hoping the experts might help to diagnose a problem.

My 993 cab has done about 100k miles, over the past couple years there has been an occasional problem with a whining noise.

Typically it happens when in traffic, when the car is warm. Depressing the clutch everything appears fine, as you lift the clutch a whine can be heard from the rear. It doesn't do it all the time and I've only ever heard it when moving away in first gear although I presume it might happen in other gears but is not detectable when moving.

I've asked the OPC in Tonbridge several times if they can find the problem but unless they hear it they can't fathom it out.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It is a whine and not a screech? Only asking because I have a screech that I can't diagnose that is also clutch related - but most often happens when depressing the clutch and normally goes away when the engine is warmed up.

It sounds like it may be the clutch release bearing Olly. Does it make the noise when when the clutch is engaged or just when moving away? Find a quiet spot and with the car warmed up and the gearbox in neutral, engage and dis-engage the clutch a few times. If it is the release bearing the whine will come when the clutch is released, it also often changes volume or pitch as the clutch engages.

It's fairly common for release bearings to make a bit of a noise when they gets on a bit and isn't really anything to worry about unless it's really loud. Unless you need a new clutch I would learn to live with it.

Mark - this may be your problem too; may be a case of one man's whine is another man's screech? [8|]

Thanks guys appreciate the knowledge and advice.

I pressuming this is an engine out job to rectify, and better left until a new clutch is required.

I think most indi's just undo the engine mounts and raise the engine a few inches to get the clearance. But still quite a bit of labour, so I would leave it until the clutch needs done.
