Clutch woes

Typically just as I think that I'm getting on top of all the little jobs that need doing, another thing crops up. Or in this case makes itself known in an obvious and major way.

I was on my way to hunt down some Zermatt Silver touch up paint, and was stopped at some traffic lights on the A45. The lights went green, and I dropped her into first, pulled up the clutch and... bang, crunch, thud. All drive gone. Whilst stuck in the fast lane of the road, just as it narrowed from 3 lanes down to 2. And with a mobile phone on next to no charge. [:(]

I managed to get hold of the RAC before my charge expired, but there followed a couple of hours of watching people cutting it as fine as possible to crashing into the back of my stationary baby before they arrived to give me a tow to Porsche Tech in Meriden.

It could be worse, of course. No one hit the back of the car, and the new clutch should see me right for a few years. And seeing as it happened yesterday, which was my wedding anniversary, the missus has offered to buy me the clutch as an anniversary present. But still, a massive pain, and it's likely to be next week before I get her back, which is frustrating as I'm booking onto the MK Classic Tour on sunday.

Arrrg - nightmare scenario! Exactly the wrong place to be when that happens and all those lovely helpful motorists to give you a push to the side of the road - not [8|]

And what are you getting her? Might I suggest one of the lovely Dyson vacuum cleaners? You old romantic![:D][:D][:D]

Hope it all gets sorted quickly!

Haha - she'd not have a clue what to do with it! And I already have one!

She's actually after a sports exhaust for her Impreza, but I'm not quite flush enough to get it for her at the mo. Still, it really helps to have a petrolhead wife at times like this, she understands why it's important to get my baby back on the road!

John, do you live in Coventry or were you just passing through?

I work in Cov, on the science park at Warwick Uni. I was headed over to Autobahn during my lunch hour to try and pick up some touch up paint.

I was going to suggest that PCT at Autobahn would have been a good place to get the clutch done. I'll keep an eye out for you - what colour is your car?

It's Zermatt Silver, which seems to look different colours depending on the weather!

I use Martin at Porsche Tech, based at Shirley's garage in Meriden, for all of my maintenance. He's a nice bloke, knows his stuff and seems reasonably priced. He did the pre-purchase inspection for me, and has looked after the car for everything its needed since, so knows it reasonably well. Luckily I broke down within 10 miles of him, so the RAC towed me straight there. I've heard good things about PCT in terms of their work, but bad things in relation to their prices! Even the RAC man suffered a sharp intake of breath when he thought I was planning to get the work done there.

Fair enough, I don't really know how their prices compare. I had my belts done there but didn't get a quote elsewhere. Good service though.
