Code reader

With Xmas coming up I thought an excellent idea for Santa to bring me would be a code reader!

Being a 1998 996 C2 tiptronic it seems it will have a DME 5.2.2 engine management system and not be fully OBD2 compliant. Most of the cheap code readers say they are for OBD2 cars so has anyone any experience of a fairly cheap reader that they could recommend and would work on this early car?

Having recently had an experience with the tiptronic gearbox where the "limp home" mode could be quickly reset by the dealer it would be very useful if the code reader could also reset problems such as this (eventually gave in and had the switch replaced).

Don't want to stretch the budget to a Durametric as it hopefully won't get much use, so any suggestions? There seem to be a lot of very cheap hand held readers advertised on the internet but I'd like to know if anyone has any experience of a good one on a pre OBD2 car. Thanks.

Having had a 1998 996, I can tell you that the OBD2 code readers aren't much use. I had a good one, and it wouldn't read fault codes that a Porsche tester would. Consider spending a few more £s and look at the iCarsoft hand held scanners. They do two models specifically for Porsche, which can read and reset fault codes in all the modules - not just engine and transmission.

Thanks Richard.

Good to know before money is wasted on the cheaper ones. I'll be taking a look at those you suggest before putting my Xmas wish somewhere that Santa can find it!
