Coilovers

My son is about to purchase coilover set up for his project 951. He made an inquiry to Leda. He got the following answer:

"Hello,

Ref: LEDA

Unfortunately, as our main factory has become unbelievably busy, from the start of 2011 we will not be continuing to build or service Leda dampers, and suggest if necessary you get in touch with AVO suspension or IG Racing.

Thank you - Graham Martin"

Since Leda is not available what other cost effective alternatives he have? We have studied a little bit what alternatives are available, and GAZ Gold seems to be interested one. But we have had two kind of information concerning the rear setup. We would like to use rear shocks without the torsion bars. Can it be done with GAZ ? Graham Martin pointed also to AVO, but looks like AVO does not offer anything for 951's.

Hi Olli,

I've also been looking at a cost effective coilover set-up and am considering three options.

There's the KW Variant 3's which a lot of people run, enjoy and rave about. They would be my first choice but are a bit pricey. Second choice would be the Gaz Gold coilovers. Again. lots of people use these and are impressed with the results. Third choice would be the relatively new SPAX RSX coilover kits. Being new not many have these but reviews I've seen have been positive. Price of the SPAX is around £600 with the Gaz another £500 and the KW's another £500 on top of that. I've also looked into the coilover kits popular in the states where you convert your existing dampers which if you can do the work yourself seem to represent great value but I'm not convinced would be worthwhile.

I'd of thought running increased spring rates on the rear of the Gaz units would allow the deletion of the torsion bars. Just a question of getting the correct spring rate but then what do I know.

I'm sure they'll be plenty of others along soon with actual real world running reports and experiences so I'll be following this one closely.

P.S. Loving your 'Young man's first Porsche aka project 951' thread! [:)]

makes adjusting the ride height much easier. I have however some years ago seen a picture of a broken rear arm on a car with no T-bars - this may have been a race car so running high spring rates - not pretty though,

Talk it through with Kevin at EMC...he can give chapter and verse on torsion bar deletion.

We are mainly interested of GAZ Golds. Just wanted to be sure they can be used without torsion bars, seems to be a lot of different opinions on that. KW is not our first choice, too expensive and i was not impressed what is inside that Candy colored product. Have had a possibility to see internal parts once. Don't know if GAZ is better or worse, but price is more suitable for a young man like my son is.

Why is it that people want to ditch the torsion bars?

We are looking for easier/faster adjustability since car will be used on both street & track

I've not read of any issues with KW, they seem to be as robust as any other kit out there. Pat (333pg333) has been running KW's race setup for some time now and we know that he properly drives his car and as far as i'm aware Pat has not had any problems with his KW setup.

On the other hand i've read a few first hand reports of Leda struts failing.
