Cold Air Blower

Hey All,

Just a quickie...

The cold air blower on my 82' 944 has stopped working, no warning signs or anything, just stopped! I've tried changing the fuse in the fuse box as per the owners manual instructions, but its still not working.

Is there another fuse somewhere that i have overlooked?

Hi Jeff, My guess would be the resistor on top of the fan motor, either a dry joint or its completely bust ( unlikely). To gain access, remove the plastic grill (run a stanley blade around the mastic and remove 2 screws and the resister is on top of the motor. Its a ceramic tube with 4 wires soldered to it, check the integrity of the connections with an a/vo meter if you can`t see a dry joint to check the wiring. To replace it, it`s easier to replace the resister only and not the complete loom its attached to, as its necessary to remove the whole heater unit .The Porsche PET shows a good diagram of the loom you require. I bought a loom from a scrap car for £15, cut off the resister and used it the replace the broken one,a 40 minute job. From memory , a new loom from an OPC is going on for £90, I think the same loom is used in a Mk2 Golf.

Just a quick follow up...

Turns out theres a 2nd fuse 'hidden' between the relays for the cold air blower. I replaced the fuse and the cold air blower is working again! Lucky eh, i thought i was cursed as the heating system has also died on my renault espace (which they quoted me £800 to replace), why dont these things happen in summer? [:D]

Anyone have any ideas as to why the fuse is of the 'new style' (square with 2 prongs) type rather then the old bullet type fuse? I'm just guessing, but back in '82 we didnt have the square type fuses, did we? Seems strange that Porsche would of mixed and matched the 2 different fuse types. I was gonna upload a pic to show you, but my mobile phone battery died!

Maybe its safer to go back to bed and write today off?... [8D]

I found the fuse between the relays (under the passenger glovebox, above the row of bullet fuses).

Give me an hour or so and i will upload a photo for you, so you can see what i mean...

Here is the pic... (i have highlighted the fuse with the red arrow)

I don't recall seeing that on mine. Saying that though some hamfisted person had fitted all the wrong fuses and bodged a amplifier directly off the fuse box so they may have just taken it out.

How many amps should it be? I should have some spare blade fuses lying around somewhere for another car.

Closer inspection shows that the fuse is 'plugged into' the actual relay (which explains why its a 'square type' fuse and not a bullet one. [8D])

Its rated at 30 (which it also says on the relay).

If you need a photo of the relay, let me know.

I don't have a relay like that in mine, can't pull the relays out at the moment either.

I did manage to get the switch out of the dashboard but it decided to pull the back off and the internals went flying, happy days.

ETA: After rebuilding the switch once I'd found all the internals that had pinged off I looked at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual and discovered that the fuse was missing, doh! Blower now works on 1 & 2 but turns off when switched to 3, going to try a new switch and see what that does.
