Cold air makes a difference

Took the car to work today and noticed how dramatically better it performed now the air temperature has dropped.

If only it was like that all the time.....

Piston engined aircraft always fly better on a cold day.

In fact, on hot summer's days you need far more runway for a safe take off.

Also makes a difference when you fill up - the colder it is the more dense the petrol is, so the more you get for your dosh!

Aircraft - I would have thought the take off thing would be more to do with the denser air through the propellor rather than more power (although I'm sure that'll make a bit of a difference also!)

the colder it is the more dense the petrol is

I dont think I`m wrong but I see it as the cooler it is, the more dense the air becomes therefore more fuel attaches itself to a greater number of air molecules in a smaller area so if the same volume of air is used the better the performance?

.........................hence the charge cooled air enters the engine via an intercooler.
