Cold start rattle

Could anyone comment on whether the very slight noise I get on cold startup is normal on a 2.7 Boxster. It only ever happens from a cold sart.

When the car starts, for the firt second of it running, there's a small rattle from the engine as if oil pressure hasn't quite built up. I'm not sure whether this is just the hydraulic tappets building up pressure or a sign of something more significant. The cars done 16K miles from new running on Mobil 1.

Quite typical I would say. I wouldn't think there was anything to worry about. The cause of the characteristic is almost certainly as you have described it.

Sounds like a bag of spanners being shaken up - yep it's normal. [:)]

It's a 986. I've no idea what grade oil is in as it was serviced before I bought it.

The "bag of spanners" really sums it up quite well. The last time I experienced anything like this was over 20 years ago when I had a Triumph GT6 that used to let the oil drain back from the filter into the sump. This caused the big ends to rattle from cold.

Now that would not be what I'd expect from a Porsche.

I think Alfas also had this problem when using non original oil filters.
