As I sat and defrosted my car windscreen this morning I wondered how many of our water cooled variants will have had their coolant protection level checked prior to it getting really cold this winter. Don't leave it too late, if in doubt have it checked by a decent garage for your own peace of mind or alternatively there is plenty of cheap coolant testers on-line if you're happy to do it yourself.
If you have your car serviced regularly this will normally be checked, but if you are like me and tend to do most of this stuff yourself its something that's easily forgotten about during the warmer months.
Always consult your handbook, dealership or why not even ask on the relevant model type forum for more info, I am sure the more technical users on our forum will be happy to advise us all as to what type of coolant should be used, a lot of our more modern cars (1998 onwards) use waterless coolant so you don't want to be simply topping up your levels with tap water or mixing it with anything else that has been standing in the corner of your garage for the past twenty years.[]
