Collapsible Oil Tubes

I've just spotted a few small oil marks on my driveway and took the car to my mechanic who says it looks like one of the oil return tubes has started to leak. I've booked it in to get this replaced with one of the collapsible oil tubes as he said the work involved to replace it with a proper one would be substantial. I'll probably get both tubes done as they're only £8 each from Berlyn Services and I might as well do both once he's taken the exhaust off. I'll leave the other side as they are dry and it would mean taking that side of the exhaust off as well.

Anyway, I'm going to the Nurburgring on Saturday and wanted to know if you guys think it's okay to thrash the car around in this state. My mechanic says that these tubes don't hold any pressure and simply transfer any oil left in the heads down to the sump via gravity. He can't guarantee it won't fail, but says it looks like it has only just started and doesn't think it will fail catastrophically. I'll check it regularly and keep a very close eye on the oil level and pressure.[:)]

The car has been faultless for over two years, and the first time I want to really push her, she starts playing up! Typical...![]

I'm afraid there are no hard and fast rules but I had two of mine done at a OPC and a year later one started leaking again but when it did it leaked big. I wouldn't want to be miles from home when it did as it can't be replaced easily especially if it's one of the ones under the exhaust. There are four, two you can get at by removing the undertray and heating pipes, the others require heat exchangers to come off with all the risks of broken studs. Having said that if they are the original tubes it's likely they're just starting to drip.

Not much help I know but perhaps food for thought.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to drive to Germany, have a great time thrashing around the 'Ring, then drive back yesterday. There wasn't a single drip wherever I parked, and she only needed a cupful of oil just to keep the level right. She's going in to get the leak checked on Friday, so fingers crossed it's nothing more serious.
